New company driver, volvo 670, wont get in gear unless I put it in while shutting off, then float. I am not good at floating yet, breakdown dept wants me to haul 42k through town like this. Says clutch will "readjust" itself. In shippers yard, has not readjusted yet. Is this a real thing? If so, how long until it's normal again?

If it will shift if you float it will shift if you clutch.

I think that's another way of saying "You must be doing it wrong". The main difference in floating and "shifting", for lack of a better term, is adding the clutching.

You're probably not engaging the clutch brake at a stop, and engaging it when you try to shift, by pushing the clutch to the floor.

Sounds like the pins on the clutch brake got sheared off or it's just worn out. If it is the clutch brake it will not adjust itself. It'll need to be replaced. Never push the clutch all the way in while the truck is moving. The only time the clutch should be pushed all the way is at a dead stop. For future reference of course.

I think I have been using the clutch correctly. This happened suddenly when I arrived at shipper. Breakdown thinks once I am rolling it will readjust and I'll be fine. Does this sound correct or should I refuse to drive it?

I don't think it's quite that simple, but that's your call.

It wouldn't be a safety issue for a driver that doesn't use the clutch unless they have to come to a stop, and they try to never have to come to a stop, but that ain't you.

Again, the main difference in floating and "shifting", for lack of a better term, is adding the clutching.

If you pull it out of gear as you relieve pressure on the components by easing off the throttle, let the rpm drop/add rpm exactly as if shifting, she'll slide right into the next gear w/o the clutch.

Floating and shifting mean two different things? Huh? How do I float myself to high gear without shifting the truck?

So I drove around bobtail and it magically fixed itself, as breakdown said it would. I did pay attention to my driving style and I tend to push the clutch down more than probably is necessary when coming to a stop. Will watch that. Breakdown said sometimes it just becomes "hateful." *shrug* Thanks to you both for the advice.

How do you adjust a clutch brake?

gps man, you are quite incorrect in your statement . it is entirely possible to float, while the pedal will do nothing at all.

if your release bearing goes out and the clutch plates are fine, the clutch pedal will not work at all, but you can start the truck in gear and drive it anywhere you want if you have the ability to float while both upshifting and downshifting. all it takes is the skill to do it. last time I did it was from Manchester,tn to Louisville,ky stopped for fuel and delivered the load in Louisville and then drove her to the shop for a clutch.
