actually, i'd like to hear the inside story from a freight broker. you know, the rates they get vs. what they pay. and what not.

It does no good to try to explain rates because to many drivers are convinced that all brokers are liars! The great misconception is that when a Broker posts a load he has already taken 50 to 75 percent off of the top and that is not always true! You notice I said not always because you and I both know that their are liars on both sides of the desk in all walks of life! There are some out there that are ever ready to gouge every carrier that they deal with but their are just as many if not more that operate in a very ethical way!

I've never had a broker put a gun to my head and force me to haul a load. You negotiate a rate and agree to haul the load. If the rate is not adequate then the carrier/owner have no one to blame but themselves. If a broker can't get his load moved for the rate he has then he'll have to back to the shipper and get more moola. It's just business, if people can't understand this then they probably should drive someone else's truck.

To the OP, nothing worth doing is ever easy. You don't have to be a liar to be a broker. I expect brokers to make a profit off the loads I haul. Why would they go through the BS if they weren't. If your just getting started you probably have gotten the freight nobody else wanted because it's super low margin and hard to sell to a truck. If you hang in there and make a bunch of calls eventually you'll build a book of business that you can make money and pay carriers a good rate.

    Just my two cents.

    the truth from me?
i was a trucker for the better part of 10 yrs and thats all i really had on my resume...so i became a broker.....
the work is harder, the pay is crappier, and the drama is 10x more....however it is rewarding if you can get a clientel that would rather use you than anyone else...

some companies give you a rate and say thats all we are willing to pay so you have to keep posting and updating that load till you get a bite...(someone will take it)
some ppl say start here, but ill go as high as here.....
some ppl say use your best judgement and get this moved for me, then we use "ratemate" on ITS and see what the avg for that trip has been lately and we post that...
my rate is 10% or sometimes a solid amount...if it comes to me for 3200 i normally take 200 off and post it for 3k.......if i can make clients then its worth it to me to take a cut sometimes....i pride myself on being as transparent as im allowed to be....so to the OP, it IS hard, but stick with it, find a place that makes you feel like you can be honest and go with them...hell call me, if you have a B.O.B we might be able to help you......hope this sheds a lil light and feel free to ask me anything

This has become a big business lately. Guys are dispatching for multiple owner operators on a daily basis for a percentage of each load. If you can find 8-10 trucks to load on the daily, you can make a pretty decent living at it and also get enough money to keep the OO's very happy.

To slowdog..... Freight brokering is not for everyone. From the looks of your post, you have been a driver for a very long time. It is not scientific by any means, but it does take a certain knack to gain customers and find good freight. You also have to have a good reliable carrier base to cover your freight. Not all brokers are scum....Not all freight that is brokered is cheap by any means, you just have to know the good freight from the bad and what lanes cost what amount, etc.... You probably could have used some training before you jumped right into the brokering business.
