Caterpillar did not use EGR, Acert engines are not EGR engines. As far as I know all others were EGR by 04, some as early as 2002 (maybe even earlier?).

Was the Acert in the egr era more reliable than the egr motors? If so what years were better for CAT? or all about the same?

Acerts had some issues, but in general have less problems than the EGR engines. The regen ones should be avoided, tons of issues with the regen system. The 2004-2007 without regen were decent. They had injector harness issues, a rocker stud update due to studs breaking, compressor inlet hose update. They have intake actuator issues, mostly caused by the injector harness failing, but the actuators do fail.

Once the updates are done, they're reliable engines. BXS, MXS & NXS are the prefix's. I've never had a BXS, but the MXS and NXS's are pretty much the same.

Most '03 and some '04 CAT's are the dreaded single turbo with MBN serial # prefix. Most '04 CAT's were ACERT twin turbo. Some early '03 CAT's were prefix 6NZ single turbo - the so-called "last of the good ones". MBN is the one to avoid at all costs unless it has been maintained well (documented) in a clean truck, checks out good, lower miles, and preferably "upgraded" *cough* *cough*. I'd take an MBN or ACERT CAT over any EGR motor. If I had none and were shopping I'd look for a 6NZ.

Well not so sure we can find much to choose from among the pre egr era. I am researching options for my co drivers first truck. I am not so sure he can get financed for a low millage 2011+ truck. Big nut to carry also first starting out. So we are looking at the pre egr eara, but he wants a automatic of some kind. So that really limits choice. I was trying to get a handle on when the egr's started. Then the CAT non egr was pointed out. That brings a lot more trucks into play up to 2007. This will be temporary for say 2 to 3 years. Hoping they make more progress with the new trucks.

I hope he can stick a few grand in to start and find something that will be reasonably reliable. He is going to run team with his brother. So down time is a killer.

80k or less gross weight step deck.

    Best suggestions?????

I want him to consider going back to a standard also. My truck is a autoshift. But I know he would have a better mix of trucks with a standard. He is comfortable with even a super 10. So it is not like he can't drive a standard. Just trying to give him some options.

CATs on 04 trucks are mostly mbn, mbl and acert bxs. detroit and cummins had egr on 04 trucks. my mbn is fine, soon to be converted into a 6nz engine.

The polution rules stared in 1970, and all the engines talked about use EGR even Cat they do it using cam timing.
    Just a thought!
