I'm 58 and was just laid-off in Feb. and want to try a different career. I have done constuction, was a Machinist for 30yrs and the last 8yrs managed a house at Drug And Alcohol rehab. (I have a past Felony conviction/prison time 94-97 and 1 from 2004 that was Dismissed/Set Aside after I completed treatment in 2005 and a suspended license 2003 & 2004 for failure to appear on a ticket)The last 10 years clean driving with no accidents, I have ten years clean and sober. I will be getting funding from the EDD-WIA in July to goto CDL A school or just pay with a credit card! I have that wondering soul in me(and now I'm single and duaghter is grown) plus I have always ridden bikes(H-D and KTM Dualsport) I love to travel. So my mind is made up, just need to see if WIA will pay or if I will have to pay! I took the test for the WIA and I passed, so I will get started in July, if I pay I can start anytime, I am debating either ASD in Fontana,CA or CIT-LA in Bellflower,CA. With CIT-LA it is Heavy Equipment Operation w/ Loading/Hauling on drop-deck/step-deck/flatbeds and CDL A truck driving in 1 class so this is my first choice if WIA pays the full price! Well I went and took my DOT Physical/Drug screen paid for TSA backgroung check for HazMat and passed all of my written tests today so I now have CDL A Permit w/ all endorsments start school in a couple weeks! I know 58 sounds kind of old to start this but I'm in better shape than most people half my age! See you all on the road soon!

Good job! You will do OK and 58 isn't too old in trucking at all. In fact, many people these days are several years older than you and entering the trucking field. Welcome to trucking.

Wishing you all the best! I turn 58 this fall and I felt I might be a little to "seasoned" to make the change into trucking. Having passed CDL school with the younger crowd I feel a lot more confident that I can hold my own. Good Luck and post your progress when you get some free time.

Not so old, I started at 54 and will be 58 in October, also doing a very physical daycab job that a lot of guys years younger couldn't handle.
Good luck out there..........still ride a Harley?......I have over 1/2 million m/c miles with over 178,000 on my current H-D.

Yeah I haul chips some still but since the pic was taken I've switched to a live floor and this time of year mostly haul bark and barkdust.
Come Fall I'll be hauling shavings and sawdust a lot but still some chips from time to time.
I haul from the mill to the grinder and then the finished product to the retailers that have the blower trucks etc.
When the seasons change I'll be hitting a lot of nurseries with sawdust etc.
It's more work than chips but I like the variety and I'm always busy, never waiting at the chip dump and I get paid better as well.
Not a bad gig, mostly 5 days a week although this time of year I do work a few Saturdays but again that pays well too.

You'll do fine Charley. Plus So-Cal is a great area to live as a trucker as there are many opportunities there.
