I was driving westbound on I-40 in Tennessee earlier today and, to my great surprise, the scale house at mm 372 is open once again. It had been closed for renovations for at least the last year. It looked like they closed down the one on the eastbound side to start renovating it.
I run through there often, as we have a terminal in Russelville, TN, going to the main terminal in Mt Juliet. I would never scale those loads because that coop was closed. Luckily today I only had 5k in the box, but they could've nailed me if I had a heavy one.
Knoxville coop open again.

I used to go around those scales pretty often hauling Bush Beans or water loads in a reefer trailer. That road by the Petro takes you around the scales.
EggoTrucker, 8thnote and 48Packard Thank this. -
yup, that's US 11 Kingston PikeChinatown Thanks this.
-
i thought that road by the petro was off limits (big sign, i had to turn around)
Chinatown Thanks this. -
US 11 is about a mile south of the Petro. I don't know if the road that Petro is on leading south to US 11 (Watt Rd) is officially off limits to trucks but I wouldn't be surprised if they made it so, just to prevent trucks from bypassing the scale. US 11 runs parallel to I-75 from Chattanooga to Knoxville, then runs parallel to 40 up to I-81. It then runs alongside 81 all the way up to Harrisburg, PA.

I've sat on the curb in handcuffs behind that scale.... won't get into details but thank God the truck they were searching next to me had a sawed off 12 ga. in it.... they let me go pretty fast.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I've run US 11 also, but so many traffic lights, it took a while. Watts Rd., not supposed to run it but I did anyway, many times; gambled and didn't get caught. Kept everything legal running hazmat/tankers, but pushed the envelope running reefers.
There's another way also, that's a legal truck route, but has lots of traffic lights; going North on I-75 get off at the last exit before the 1-75/I-40 split, maybe it's Lenoir City exit. Then run 321 to 129 Northbound. Of course it's better to run by the book, but sometimes you're backed into a corner so you just do what you have to do.Last edited: Jun 15, 2014
Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this. -
Then again you could drive legal and not worry about it. Just a thought.

As I posted; it's a legal truck route. Watts Rd. isn't, but 321/129 is legal. A good driver has to use his own brain and not depend on some desk jockey to think for him.

If going to/from I-75- Chattanooga/Nashville, I always used hwy 27/62/61 through Oliver Springs. It's shorter and misses them. If staying on I-40 I got good at letting 20 trucks get in front of me to use the bypass when full. It's not hard to do. I do it even when I don't have to. Kind of a game for me.

That's the closest scales to me and I bet I've only weighed there three times there over the years.
