Anyone buy an old TMC rig?

I suggested against buying a TMC truck

 

I worked for TMC in 2008-2009. Would've bought the truck I was in then, if it had come up for sale. Almost did buy one of the ex-TDT KW T800's but bailed for unrelated reasons. Would not buy one now, especially from what I'm hearing their maintenance has become. I don't remember it being nearly that bad, but then again I worked there when the trucks were governed at 65 (with a bump to 72 rewarding 2 years of good behavior), we were given a PO# WEEKLY for a truck wash, and the average truck was a 2005 or 2006.

 

Did I miss something? I don't see where I said anything about that????

 

They ALLOW the truck to be washed weekly. They only REQUIRE every 2 weeks now.

 

no the guy is looking for a truck to buy, he asked about old tmc trucks, he never said he was specifically looking for a pete. that the tmc trucks happen to be petes has nothing to do with anything.

a smart guys buys a truck in good shape , and doesn't buy on looks , or whether its a pete or volvo

I always wanted a used TMC 379, then i wanted a tmc 387

settled for my swift truck columbia, couldnt be happier (ok, if i could have had my england classic)

 

I disagree. Not with the "looks" part but on the make. A volvo has expensive parts and it is hard to find places in between bum F egypt and east jesus nowhere to work on them. That is 1 reason why my company got rid of its 100+ volvos and are moving to KW. A freightliner has cheaper parts and can be found almost anywhere. Same thing goes with engines. CAT and Detroit mechanics are everywhere vs finding a competent volvo mechanic. So if you're thinking ahead about maintenance/repair costs, the make of the truck does make a difference.

 

I had one that just went down the road last week for a new owner. Little different circumstances but i'll tell about it anyway.

Truck is an '07 379 we bought it '10 when TMC had to liquidate some trucks to try and keep afloat. It had right around 300k when we got it. It had 767,000 on it when we let it go I put about the last 200k on it. Last year I got 6.19 mpg on all miles running 68 mph (22.5's). I pull a flat about 3/4 of the time and a grain hopper the rest. Clutch center went out at about 700k, never added one drop of oil between changes (10k) and we had to have one injector roller changed right around 650k. Other then that nothing more then typical things you would replace here and there on a truck. We had no turbo or actuator problems that these can be known for. I went into a nicer truck but I can honestly say I will miss it.
