When I got out of school, I found a truck owner that was just as green as I was. He tossed me the keys and told me he'd pay me 25% of what I could earn with the truck. I drove for him for a year and a half, averaging $4k/week to the truck on 2000 miles or less. So no, you don't need to work for a big company for slave wages until you gain experience.

Get all of your endorsements, and your TWIC. Passport is nice to have also. You'll have a lot more options.

As long as they have fresh meat in the seats that do zero research they'll be fine. There are ways to do well at megas, but you have to go in with the right attitude and look for opportunity. When I went to Covenant in 2000 that's the attitude I had. The first time my trainer made a dry division driver give us his empty reefer, I knew reefer was where it was at at Covenant. I pulled 3-4500 mile weeks as a rookie, gaming the system by getting to Cali 24 hrs early, dropping my load grabbing an empty reefer and getting loaded. I did this why dry guys were waiting 3-5 days for a load out, complaining how Covenant sucked instead of figuring what I did. I can't imagine coming into truck driving thinking I was going to be home every day before I paid my dues unless I wanted bust my $&@ merchandising beer or soda for $4-500 a week.
If the OP wants a great job, go work in a Publix warehouse for a few years and figure our how to fast track driver. It takes time though, just like UPS. It's 5-10 years at the hub just to get in a parcel truck down here.

You want to win the lottery without buying a ticket.
we all been thru this garbage just like you.
you'll be amazed at what just 5 or 6 months of doing
hard time at one of these bottom feeders will do for you.

all kinds of doors will open up.you might even learn something.

I welded for years ,dont want to beat up my eyes any more.

I found this site when ever I was wondering about a trucking company the horror stories pop up during the search.Thats exactly how I found this place.

I do know now that you have to buy your ticket /pay your dues..But when your looking at truck driving as you see trucks of all kinds out on the roads. You just dont think that you automatically have to become a Homeless like person on a highway hundreds of miles away from home for a tear .Just to get a job driving a truck around town.

Hopefully Ill land on my feet .

The problem is your competing against guys that have experience for those jobs that have paid their dues. As a business owner, especially in FL, you have your pick of guys with a year or two experience vying to make $12-14 an hour. There is no way you're going to hire a rookie with no experience over a guy with a clean record and a year of not hitting stuff. That's why they are called training companies. The only thing CDL school does is train you to get a CDL, not drive truck.

I'm sorry I couldn't read all the other post. Did anybody tell this butter cup to man up. What's up with all this crying. Cry me a river already. There's a chick on here tarping flatbeds and this dude is crying about being in a motel and not doing his research on Trucking or Werner. And all of you guys are giving him all kinds of decent advice. This dude don't want to work. He wants somebody to hand him a paycheck for just breathing. Goodness gracious folks stop encouraging these crybabies to continue in this industry. We have enough steering wheel holders, and truck lounge cry babies. I can't believe this dude said he don't want to be a truck driver but just drive and go home or whatever nonsense that dude said. Sure is funny how he finds this site after he put all the time in to get a cdl.

They test you.... right or wrong they test you till your breaking point. I get sick of people dragging Werner through the mud. I ejoyed it there... good times and bad. I got my experience and got out. They paid off my school and both years I made around 65k.

    You reap what you sow
