Hello all,
My wife and I are looking in to other schools since we did not feel comfortable with Dootson. Seems too rushed and not enough teaching for someone new to this industry. We want to be safe and learn as much as possible before hauling 80K down a highway!
Anyways, we have been looking into Swift Academy, however I had a question regarding their trucks. I read somewhere, however, it was a post back in 2009 that Swift does not allow power inverters on their trucks. Is this true? I know they do not have APU's, but if no APU's and will not even allow power inverters, that makes it very unappealing.
Question regarding Swift policy

It's not enforced. There are reasons to drive for swift and not to drive for swift but the inverter policy is a non issue.

No matter what company 80k straight up is rare
weights vary -
I just want to make sure. Want to be able to be somewhat comfortable on the road with a fridge and small microwave so we can eat decent and not spend a lot of money eating out or at truck stops. The APU is not that big of a deal since we will be teams and the truck moving most of the time.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
No inverter large enough to power a microwave is allowed in a company truck. Anything electrical has to be plugged into the lighter socket, so you're limited to 12V appliances, or anything that draws under 150W. A Crock Pot on Low works fine on a plug-in inverter.

When your going to go to a terminal, unhook the cables from the battery. The cables will only last so long in the varying temps so keep an eye on 'em. You might get a year out of them.
A 1500 watt inverter will run a small microwave.
I never did that of course.
Get a lunch-box stove that plugs into the cigarette light socket and you can cook small stuff like burritos or breakfast sandwiches.
EDIT: It's actually a 2k inverter I have.lakerized805 Thanks this. -
I don't want to do anything to get me fired, just think it's pretty silly these big trucking companies could care less about your quality of life on the road. Hell I would even pay for swift shop to install it all professionally if they allowed them.
In my eyes a happy and comfortable employee is a loyal and good producing employee!Chinatown Thanks this. -
SWIFT does NOT allow inverters in company trucks nor do they have any trucks with them preinstalled.I was a student and a driver with swift and let me tell ya they slip seat, their cpm is low 2 start but catches up eventually the people wont hesitate to make you feel like your wasting their time when you come to them with questions i have had their recruiters flat out lie to me their instructors for their driving school in millington are a joke and even their instructors once you leave millington to the next place will tell you they have to retrain everyone who comes through...ohh and MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR LOAD ON A SCALE started with my 1st load and continued to my last load qualcomm would say 20k lb's bol would say 34k and when you get it to a scale it'd say 50+ and if you call in 2 get permits you WILL be laughed at..they will lie through their teeth about cpm till you get into orientation 43cpm my ### try 22cpm if ur runnin dry vans on otr..i dare ya to go in ask for a quick b service oil change or anything of the like their shop people will flat out tell you to your face you dont drive quick we dont work quick.their trucks are all governed @ 63mph not matter what ur running their volvo's feel like freaking oceanliners everywhere even when its not bumpy or windy their trailors all temd 2 have [roblems such as the tandem lockin pins not releasing ooh and 67mph is considered a critical event get to many of those they will leave you stranded at the nearest terminal just ask even if its downhill you better not break wind and catch 67 64=nasty grams on the tattletale speed limit could be 80 they dont gaf yours is 63...whatever you do DONT listen to their recruiters they will tell you unicorns exist and they ride as your passanger for all your trips if they think it will get you in that seat
oh and def dont believe their little bs about 90-100% no touch freight try 10% no touch if your lucky.if something as simple as your turn signal lever breaks expect to sit 3+ days turn down a single load in your 1st year and expect to pay dearly for itLast edited: Jun 18, 2014

school wise it is an 'accelerated program' meaning you will spend 2 weeks prolly in millington,tn with some quacks who will tell ya water is wine...if you need a 3rd week there you give up the potential for a 2nd week of real on the road training at your next location expect really crappy hours during you 2 week stay there aswell start out for 3 days 5am-5pm then go to 5pm-4am for 1 day then 11am-9pm for a day then back 2 5am-5pm the rest of the time you will spend your 1st day going over contracts and basic saftey stuff such as 3 points of contact and log books then you will go out to the 'range' where you will spend you next week and a half driving trucks with 600,000+ miles on them in reverse with trailors that dogwalk and trucks that want to regen everytime you turn around fighting for a place in those crappy trucks and during that first 2 weeks there will be 2 instructors 2 40+ students at the end of which you will have 2 big tests 1 is your backing skills tests which if you fail you will be forced to stay another week and if you fail again you will be required to pay 700 to continue for an additional week if you fail your map skills test you will be 'exited from the program' and still owe swift the full tution amount of 3900 if you had your own place to stay or 4400 if you used their sextel....the motel they have you stay in is called the admirality in and they have ####roachs with nametags you will be bunked 4 people to a room #### old twin beds box spring 'cable tv' like 40 channels most are #### and you may even be bunked with someone who is on a different schedule from you meaning they will be wide awake when you get back the 'free breakfest' is not provided as you gotta catch the bus @ 5:30am and they dont start serving it till 6am you will get little cesars pepporoni and cheese pizza half a pizza each for their free 1 time lunch the walmart that they claim is close by is actually just short of 2 miles same with kroger the kroger closes @ 11pm its not a 24 hour job like the shuttle guy might tell you....expect to pay $40 to get a swift approved dot physical done by a stna even if you already have one from a doctors/hospital expect to buy a rain suit they dont stop for weather expect to spend about 100 each on extra supplies that arent listed a few days after you get there and they will be mandatory..if for any reason you fail or decide to quit the program at any time you will be left stranded so expect to pay for your own way back home..ohh and ALL rooms appointed by swift are none smoking smoking in a room is grounds for being exited from the program....dont listen to their 45degree ######## either it will only mess you up its a fair starting point to learn how the trailor reacts but to get it where you want it this will work maybe 1/10 times if you still insist on going i strongly advise ignoring doug and kevin and seeking out 'ms.d or the skinny old dude....no fighting permitted between students on or off school grounds this will result in ALL involved parties being kicked out no matter who swung first or did or said what.ooh and be ready for strong winds their 'range' is out beside a military air field in a flat wide open space...if you manage to make it passed this step congrats only about 40% do dont expect to go straight to road training there is a strong chance they will send you home for 2 weeks first...road training lasts 1 week and depending on what state your from the hotel will be better there will now be 4 students and 1 instructor 2 a single truck most of the time this will last about 1 week before you take your dmv test you will have another backing test and a road test a few days before you go to the dmv you better pass here if you dont same rules apply as above and if by chance you from ohio or are sent to ohio for raod training do NOT go to the springfield dmv they just love failing people over bs go to roadmaster in columbus...they will pay for 1 test at their chosen location after that its upto you scheduling another test can be a pain usually takes about a month there is NO free anything during this time and you can only drive mon-fri about 2 hours a day the instructors are not afraid to slap your hands with empty bottles and such when you mess up or crack jokes about your driving behind your back and they will play favorites so if your smart you'll bring extra cash 2 buy yours a lunch or something and try to make friends with them.if you have made it thus far congrats on dealing with their bs and lies while still managing to get your cdl's upto this point you will make no money and orientation is not paid either it lasts 3 days and before this point you will more than likley have to wait another 1-2 weeks before you go for orientation...next you will be waiting on a truck could be same day or sometime next month just depends on how lucky you are...they pay min wage during your 4-6 weeks with a mentor which comes out to about $300wk after taxes during this time make you money stretch cause you never know when your mentor is gonna want home time and leave you stranded in some hotel god knows where without extra money for upto a week for which you wont be paid...
