Ahoy, All..
I just got hit with this one today...
One of my classmates was told recently that the number of reflectors on those highway edge markers (the little green sticks with the shiney bit on top) has significance.
In particular, IIRC:
a marker with one reflector means (essentially) "Hard Shoulder" - should be ok for any big rig to put wheels there.
a marker with two reflectors means "firm shoulder" - you are taking your chances, lighter rigs should probably be ok, but heavier rigs are gonna be in trouble
a marker with three reflectors means "soft shoulder" - yeah, do NOT put your rig on this shoulder. It'll sink from sight and only the Morloks will know where it is.
Anybody else heard this one? I couldn't find anything in a quick search on the 'net

Hope you realize that even a hard shoulder can be bad at times. snow could be hiding a sudden drop-off, rain could soften a hard sholder and the side of the road is not ever a good place to park! Only use the shoulder in an emegancy!

Of course, the only use for a shoulder is to cry on. In other words, if I'm on the shoulder, I'm probably crying! (that would be bad - does horrible things to my beard!)
But the question wasn't about whether or not to use the shoulder, but about what the various numbers of reflectors on the posts might mean -
This is another one of those things that may or may not be true depending on where you are. I've personally not heard of this before, but even if it is true in one state, that doesn't mean it is true in the next one.

Yeh, just remember we can't get all of the states to mark the roads with standard mile markers, something to think about in California.
-
I rather thought that might be the case - state-by-state and no standardization.
As for Kalifornia, I refuse to drive there, so it's not a problem for me

I have heard this before and I know some are numbered for map location reference points as on a blueprint.I DON'T know if its true.I do agree that all states are different as far as the way that DOT maintenance runs things.
