CATOOSA COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - One man is dead after being hit and killed by a tractor trailer Thursday morning as he stood outside his broken down car.
The Georgia State Patrol confirms the accident happened around 4:05 a.m. on I-75 northbound.
Troopers say the man experienced car problems and pulled his Volkswagen Jetta off to the right lane of the interstate.
But a tractor trailer driver didnt see the pedestrian who was standing in the right lane of the interstate outside his vehicle.
"He was wearing black clothes, black shirt, so the driver would not have seen the pedestrian in enough time to get out of the way, said GSP Trooper Michael Best.
Trooper Best helped with the investigation and said the tractor trailer had just left the weigh station near MM143 and was northbound on I-75 and nearing Ringgold when the accident happened.
The driver was traveling 55mph at the time of the impact and swerved to avoid the man. He will not be charged in the pedestrians death.
"He's very shook up as to be expected, Trooper Best said.
Now Sgt. Bill Case with the Georgia Department of Public Safety is using this accident as a teaching tool.
"If your car breaks down or you see you're having trouble, if you can make it to a safe spot such as an exit ramp, that's the safest place to be, Sgt. Case said. "Exit the vehicle. Stay between your car and away from the interstate, whether its woods or a field or whatever, stay away from the vehicle."
As for passing drivers, Sgt. Case said to be alert and move over to the next lane or slow down to a safe speed when passing broken down vehicles.
The far right lane of the interstate was closed for several hours Thursday as officials investigated the accident.

There are major differences in the two incidents... for starers one was going well over the posted speed limit.. I belive is was 20mph over the posted speed limit.. also, the other driver was very fatigued and should not of been driving...
I just switched accounts and found myself struggling to get enough sleep.. and there was one night, where I was exhausted but just could not get any sleep... one reason was I kept getting leg cramps, and my fore arm muscles were very sore.. just started a flatbed gig so using muscles that havent been used in awhile.. anyone.. I got maybe an h our of sleep.. so I called my dispatcher and we decided it would be best for me to take the shift off and try to ge rested... Ithink it was the best and safest thing to do... I have been tired before and did the 5 hour energy thing.. but, there is a point where your just too tired and exhausted for 5 hour energy or whater to work.. and you just need rest and sleep...
With this driver.. the pedestrian was dressed in dark clothes and standing in his lane.. by the time he became visible to the driver... in his headlights.. it was too late.. the driver tried to swerve.. but was unable to avoid hitting the man...
I drive over night.. and you just cant see as far down the road as you can during the day..
I feel bad for the driver and his family, as well as the mans family and friends..Dewey120 Thanks this. -
See that front collision avoidance is working out for the freight boys. Bummer.

MM 143 is south of Macon and I don't think there is a scale at that MM, the Ringgold scale is MM 343. -
