My name is Elvis, and I currently reside in the depths of a retirement town with jobs shutting down left and right, and no future for high school graduates. Liverpool, Nova Scotia to be exact. I'm turning 24 in a couple weeks, and managed to save up around 2k from the local call center job I work at. But I am feeling really depressed and hopeless at the the moment because like I mentioned, there is no future for me here..

I'm at the point in my life where I need to focus on my future, find a career, and be able to support myself and potentially others. The problem is that I'm flooded with so much info googling everything from different jobs to different places to move, that I don't know which ones to trust and which ones not to.

I'm lucky to have found this forum, because it seems like people here are giving their experiences of what worked and what didn't work for them. As well as people who have been in this industry for a long time. Real life experience always trumps reading information in my opinion.

One thing I know for sure is that I do enjoy driving, especially long drives on the highway or perhaps even big trucks in the oil fields. I've always had a curiosity for driving trucks, but have never had any direction from friends or family members. I'm pretty clueless to the whole thing, but I just need help getting my life on track.

So all in all, I would love to get input from anyone as to what or which courses to take, and what jobs to get afterwards and where. I heard working out west seems to be the best option.

    thank you for reading,
    sincerely Elvis.

With a cool name like Elvis you will succeed in trucking. Go for it. Do you plan to relocate?

No cb handle needed you can just use your real name. That is great. I wanted to name my son something fun like that (my 1st choice was hondo) but my wife wouldn't go for it

    NewNashGuy Thanks this.

Trucking is a very important PROFESSION. It would be a good choice for you. Also the fact that you are Canadian is a good thing. Your dollar is strong. I recommend everyone who has money to invest buy Canadian bank bonds or Oil Stocks. You have to understand the Canadian exchanges are wild and loose with the rules but that is where you money should be today.

Plan on saving at lease 15% of your paychecks and in 20 years you will be way ahead of the game. Welcome to trucking, eh.

Yes out in Western Canada google oil field compaines. Stay away from Ft. McMurray.

Elvis, if you are young and without current obligations to support a family, then seriously consider living "out of the truck" for a period of a few years. Trust me, you'll save a LOT more than 15% of your paychecks. The only regular expenses you would have on the road would be food and cell phone/WiFi connection. After a few years you'll have saved thousands, possibly be able to purchase your own truck and be an O/O. Or you can afford to support a family.

Bingo, we have a winner!!!!! When I first started driving, I made a financial plan, I was 24, working in the family business for 2 years after I graduated from college. I got into trucking. At 24 I started my career and finacial goals. I had a 30 year plan. I followed it, every year for the last 34 years I have put at least 15% into my retirement account, it started as a 401K, then went to a Roth IRA, I did this religiously and still do. I wanted to retire before 65, I can do that right now if I wanted to. My wife said she would shoot me if I retired before 65. I think I have her convinced on 62. My point is, set a plan in motion, set goals, and follow through with them. I started this 34 years ago, it might seem like a long time to some, but let me tell you, those 34 years have flown by. It seems like yesterday I had my first deposit into my retirement account, which was a mighty $26.50 that first week.

If you can relocate, do it. If you're young, then by all means do it. There's oil fields throughout Canada, there's plenty of oppurtunities to drive a truck up there, get a game plan on paper, and do it.

I Definitely plan on relocating, I just need some sort of direction/plan and an ammount to save up.

Its a pretty lonesome town. Lot's of lobster though!

i work at a call center as of now, I get the "like pressley?" and "do you own a pair of blue suede shoes teehee". Believe it or not it doesn't get old when i hear it. It's just funny how people react when I throw that bomb at them haha. "*pause*...alvis...ooh..ELVIS! haha."

    this sounds interesting..Moar!
that seems like 10 tons of self-discipline.
