Friend of mine just completed training and got into a '14 Cascadia-he says there's no way to idle, or to set a temp range for the sleeper-surely Swift isnt letting drivers suffer like that!!
Says theres no climate control panel in the sleeper, and no way to use the cruise control to keep it running-anybody else experience this?
No climate control?

im sure there is a climate control in the sleeper. far as the no idle thing that don't shock me at all
they prob have it set up for over 80 and it will idle -
In order to idle the truck continuously your friend will need to wait about 5 minutes. At first on the Qualcomm it will indicate that he has an "Idle Violation". That's a 60 second warning that the engine is about to shut off.
Just before the engine shuts off a red check engine light will start flashing on the dashboard. When that happens tap the throttle to rev the engine slightly and the red flashing light should turn off and the engine should continue to idle.
Swift trucks don't have APU's, but you can idle the trucks for comfort and safety. In winter they have Webasto heaters in the bunk, but you should idle anyway under 20ºF to keep the fuel from gelling.
I've been in eight different trucks in my first year with Swift, and they each seemed to have little quirks regarding idling. One would do alright with the 5 minute warning rev and then would still cut out after another 10-15 minutes. Another (a KW) was able to increase idle rpm using the cruise control to maintain idle (something none of the Cascadia's would do). -
tell friend to find another swifty with the freight shaker, or ask shop how to make truck go past 5 min shut off. Most likely press clutch in when shut off light comes on. -
I think pressing the clutch in when the red light flashes is only for ProStars (or so I've heard). Swift has a video that demonstrates the clutch technique for extending idling. I've tried that on all six Cascadia's I've driven and both Kenworth's and it never works. Only the throttle will override idle shut down, and in the case of the one Kenworth only increasing idle rpm with the cruise control worked.
If you go to a shop to ask them how to extend idle time then avoid any shop in California. They can't/won't touch the issue due to CARB. -
Well, hes got to sleep sometime, I told him to start talking to the safety dept about it--

In both '14 cascadias I had the throttle trick would only work for 5 min then you would have to do it again. If you release the tractor brakes you will defeat the shutdown for 30 min but it will still shut down after that.
They are supposed to have a temp setting, if it is over 70 deg outside it should idle continuously, no tricks required. My first cascadia did not have that feature and I had to take it to the shop for them to program that, but my second one had that feature and would idle indefinitely if temps were above 70.
Incidentally it was the Lathrop, CA terminal that fixed the truck to allow it to idle. -
I think every time we go to a terminal we should find the office pukes ac equipment which will always be in sight of an electrical disconnect box and shut off power to their ac. It will get mighty warm inside before anyone thinks to check if anyone even realizes the disconnect is a code requirement. They'll probably have to wait hours for the HVAC service people to show up.
After it gets really warm inside go in and tell them how much you appreciate their contribution to lowering the " idle percentage".not4hire Thanks this. -
Every Freightliner, Columbia and Cascadia, I have driven the cruise controlled the idle. With the truck idling, shut off the cruise then turn it back on. Then push the "resume" button to bump up the RPM.
