I myself have considered getting into the industry for years. Im 21 now and I have an offer for Knight transportation and I am wondering if this is my chance to take it. I have always worked factory since i was 18 my father to this day is a trucker and swears its horrible but he sits very well off. his dad before him and so on. I guess im just looking for a little advice is there money to be made in this profession is Knight going to take care of me and my family? any input into this would greatly appreciate by me.

    Mike,

First question is do you have your CDL A or are you going to acquire this through the first employer ?

Knight might be a good start for you. Get your foot in the door. Once you gain some experience and years many more opportunities will open up for you. You won't make top dollar as a company driving pulling vans or reefer. Tankers is where the money is at for company drivers unless you can get on with walmart!

Being that you are in a solid state for freight you shoudn't have a problem with loads or loads that will get you home for home time. I would say that you would have no real issues. I have no knowledge of Knight personally but I do see there rigs around that Tri State area a lot.

The key is you want to go with a company and put in you one year with them, so then you can move on with another carrier who might treat a little better if they are not getting it done. There is a ton of freight in that market pretty much all year around so finding a company that would work you the way you would prefer to have home time shouldn't be a problem.

    Hope this helps.

Mike having worked for Prime and Knight and spoken to many drivers my suggestion would be to go apply at Prime. Every company has pros and cons but the biggest things for me is being able to sleep and be comfortable in my truck. 98% of Knights fleet do NOT have APU's for me being in AZ that meant sweating my butt off in the Knight truck if it was under 85 degrees. I drove Port and Rail from July to September and most nights would start with idling and then truck would shut down once temp got low enough then you wake up in puddle of sweat. Knight is a good company but my comfort is number 1. Also your governed speed is based on idling so if you idle too much you lose speed and your bonus. Anyway just my 2 cents. I really liked Prime I leased with them until I had some medical issues and got out of the truck. Had Knight had APU's and found my stuff or reimbursed me for stuff hat was stolen out of my truck when I was home for 2 days I might still be with them. If your interested in Tanker Prime has a good setup as well out of the Springfield, MO terminal.

I think Prime pays something while in training as well. I can ask a few people I know who went through the program there.
