I tripped one while I was in CDL school, and another one a few weeks ago in NYC (Astoria Blvd), going under the 12'6" elevated tracks. Never heard a thing back about either of those times.

Because people speed through them, while others come to a complete stop on yellow(scared to get a ticket).

Obviously not. No condition can be found responsible for a crash unless at minimum it causes all like-type vehicles subject to that condition to crash. Conditions have no method by which to single-out motorists to attack and cause to crash.

We needn't address the single cause fallacy.

Wrong. It is believed by a few, who, absent any driving skills, cry loud and constantly that driving is just too hard for them.

Since they simultaneously ignore grandmothers driving their last miles and children driving their first miles somehow manage to not run red lights, they are ignored by all but the most oblivious motorists.

What are you saying? That red light cameras are beneficial to safety?

No RLC has ever caused a single crash, and no credible study has ever cited a single crash caused by a RLC, not has any crash report found a RLC the cause of any crash. It is obviously logically impossible for a stationary inanimate object mounted above traffic to cause a vehicle to crash.

Crashes are "associated" with RLCs, not "caused" by them. Motorists are responsible for their crashes.

There's no problem for that solution. The vast majority of motorists have been managing to stop for red lights for better than 70 years, in decades past by grandmothers in land yachts with bias ply tires and 4-wheel drum brakes, in rain and on snow covered streets... and the yellow interval standard then was 1 second per 10 mph of speed limit.

Well, you can believe your conspiracy theories, or you can believe some motorists are not fit to be licensed.

I'd say they can't be detrimental to safety, and those who can't drive any better than a grandmother or a child should be cited for running them. The incompetent always have an excuse, they just never make any sense to anyone but the incompetent.

Logically, RLCs should quickly bring an end to red light running, and RLC vendors would be out of business.

For some reason... it isn't working out that way, and the vast majority of motorists managing to not run red lights is overwhelming evidence red light running is not the result of yellow intervals.

It isn't about incompetence but human nature. It is natural to speed up when the light turns yellow so drivers become accustomed to this and when the person in front of you suddenly slams on their brakes..........Have you ever driven in Chicago? The yellow lights are very short and these RLCs are everywhere. If you're traveling 35 mph which is a very typical speed for driving around this city and the light suddenly turns yellow and you're about 100 feet from the intersection do you literally SLAM on your brakes and risking the person in back of you rear ending you or do you give more gas and speed through the intersection? It is a split second decision every driver has faced. Which situation is more dangerous? Remember the traffic signal for traffic going across from you has a second or so delay from when your light turns red to when theirs turns green. Even then there is a 3/4 second delay by the time they take their foot off the brake pedal and start accelerating. So you crossing that intersection a split second after your light turned red is in no way a safety hazard.

.Here is a good website showing some statistics.

    http://www.motorists.org/red-light-cameras/increase-accidents

And these cameras don't just capture red light runners but also people who make right turns on red. Is it just to ticket somebody $100+ for stopping for 1 second instead of three?

I don't remember where I use to see them, but there was one state where the green light starting flashing 5 seconds before it turned yellow. I always thought it was a great idea, but obviously it never caught on. People are just too hurried these days and push for every last second they can get. How many times have you had another vehicle come roaring around you just to get one or two vehicles ahead of you? What'd they save? 3 seconds? 8 seconds?
Look at all the tailgaters on the highway. Leading cause of accidents in the country....following too close.
The only persons I ever heard complain about RLCs are those that were ticketed by one.
