My wife and I are currently wanting to start our own authority. We have team drove on a lease for over a year and a half now and have saved enough money to buy a used truck and reefer trailer under our own authority. However we do have some questions from people who have experience on their own. I think we'll do well considering the truck will be paid for and the trailer as well, on the other hand i have been hearing that direct shipper contacts are the only way to go and be successful. We do not have any such connections thus far but are currently looking. Therefore we will be relying on load boards and brokers starting out. My questions are (1). Should we be better off on our own than a lease? (2). By using brokers and load boards what are some of the better services to use? Also we will have a maintenence account for any unexpected repairs, any other things i should be on the lookout for that can interfere with success that you may think i should know about or any advice at all is very welcome and appreciated. Thanks in advance for any light that can be shone on the subject.

Check with OOIDA concerning load boards.

Check with Paramount Freight Systems and Farm2Fleet about hauling some of their loads and contacts.

Hi happy, it's been many years since I've had my own truck, and maybe someone can help, but when I paid my truck off, my accountant strongly urged me to have a truck payment and depreciation, as I got killed in taxes after I paid the truck off. Maybe things have changed. Best of luck to you.

Not sure about a team as I run solo but I haul pretty much all broker freight and am well over $2 a mile for every single mile my truck moves for the year including going home etc. you can get good rates from brokers off load boards.

That at being said, as a team you might find a company to lease to that will pay you great money and provide a trailer. You'd also have a few less headaches to deal with being leased; billing, IFTA, etc. I would guess teams are probably in great demand right now with the new HOS rules and Elogs. Another thing I would add, as a team you're going to put a ton of miles on a truck. Set aside plenty of money for replacement as you go. Good luck!

I'd find a company that has a decent amount of team or expedited freight and pays a decent percentage to start. Different locations have different opportunities, that's why it's helpful to at least list your state in your profile.
