Son did it in '03, I had good insurance and he's done very well with it. A wheat allergy cost him the weight and a pro baseball career. The extra weight took out his knees.
He had the full bypass and has dropped 150 lbs. Has to do as he's told though, vitamins and such but he's a much happier man.
Price was 40k and my cut was $1500. He regrets not going all the way and having the excess skin dealt with, my carrier would have paid..... but all in all a good experience and I recommend it. I would also pass on the band thing.
JMO as dad.....

I know one person who had gastric bypass and got down to a healthy weight... except most of her hair fell out because she can no longer absorb the nutrients she needs. I know another who had the surgery and only lost 50 pounds, and can't take the rest off (she looks like she could stand to lose another 150). I know yet another person who is set on having it. I just have to be supportive even though I think it is a bad idea. Sure, the surgery or complications can kill you, but being morbidly obese can kill you too. Diets don't work, you have to change your lifestyle. Surgery just forces you to do it. Has your friend tried taking probiotics, eating full fat dairy (like whole fat yogurt and milk, not junk food), increasing his fiber intake, and eating a nice breakfast of oatmeal and fruit? If he does those things I would bet you any money that he starts eating less during the day.

its a lifestyle change but diets do work as long as you keep at it, I finally cracked down and got back on a diet this past week and I lost 8 lbs in the last 4 days. This time around im doing mostly a liquid diet drinking 2 protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and then for dinner something light and healthier and cutting out all the sodas I was drinking. Just in 4 days I feel better with more energy, I guess its true all that junk makes you sluggish. Up until last week I was eating a bit more convenience foods such as frozen burritos and other frozen meals.
I also found out last night 2 others are doing the same diet at the DC im working out of and one of them said he lost 15 lbs in the last 2 weeks. If anyone wants to give the shakes a try its the "premier protein" at costco, its 18 for $25 I believe. -
Also my Dr. told me to cut out all carbonated drinks, the "bubbles" swell and will eventually permanently stretch the pouch allowing more room for more food. I was amazed at how much better I felt after 90 days of nothing but water and protein drinks (except for coffee, I refuse to follow all the rules LOL).

I didnt give up my coffee completely either, I still have a cup when i wake up but I have cut out the sodas for almost 2 weeks so far, weight loss slowed a tad but I have managed 15lbs so far in 2 weeks for a grand total of 43 from my highest weight last year.

Problem is this isn't a permanent solution, just a temp weight loss through a bad method. You will not be able to live off of protein shakes forever and will go back to burritos with a bigger passion down the road. I eat all the crap, but in moderation and exercise so my body treats food differently than a sedentary person. Stagnant cells die, moving cells regenerate. Figure out ways to eat like normal, but trim the excess by cutting out the fries and soda, or get a small sizes. You could easily continue this without feelings like you are on a diet. My issues were eating too much at one sitting, I could eat 3-4000 calories easily at once, once I got my meals between 700-1200 max calories things digested quicker, i found I could eat plenty of calories in the day, but spaced out a few times.
People need to study the lifestyle of American prisoners, they eat junk, workout, have regular sleep cycles, and are jacked and strong. There is something to this. -
