Does speed cause the mpg to change drastically?

    You've been a driver 10 years...?

Lol, my husband is a truck driver... Guess I need to change that. But when I ride with him, he drives terribly slow, and says its to save fuel.. I was wondering if it made a huge difference, being that other truckers pass us like were standing still!!! So I figured that I would ask the pros

We don't use gas, we use diesel. This question makes no sense.

0.1mpg in fuel saved equals roughly $1000/year and every 1mph increase over 55mph looses about 0.1mpg.

So 55mph vs 70mph saves about $15000/yr in fuel cost, not to mention you increase drivetrain life. So less money on tires, shocks, engine, transmission, rearends, bearings...

Bottom line is absolutely yes, driving slower saves fuel. Other threads here have discussed the issue, and from my own experience and experimenting in various trucks around 58-62 mph seems to be the best speed to drive in order to have best fuel efficiency versus getting enough miles in to stay on time.

Wind drag is the big killer, and it increases exponentially with speed. Sounds like your husband is a smart driver.
