You deliver the chemical to the customer and then take the empty, dirty trailer to the tank wash, sometimes this can be 400 miles back to the tank wash for cleaning the tank. All you do is drop off the dirty trailer and wait for another assignment, sometimes sitting in the tank yard the rest of the day until they tell you where to go on your next assignment. Yes, sometimes we drop and hook a pre loaded trailer right away. My typical trips are about 400 or 500 miles or so. Sometimes they send me 1,000 miles away, but for some reason, I don't get those long trips too often anymore. I like going far away because I make bigger paychecks. We haul all kinds of different chemicals, acid, various hazmat loads, but mostly chemicals that make paint. I don't get many trips out West. I go as far out west as Texas mostly. It's rare if you go all the way out West but some drivers claim they have been all the way to Oregon and California. I've been with the company six months. I sure hope to get a load out west. My friend is a driver for Schneider and he got lucky to go to Canada on a few loads.

Good information, thanks! The last time I drove was in 2005, and I just completed a 40 hours refresher course at Alvin Community College. Right now, Schneider seems to be the most attractive for me a beginner tanker driver. Do you know of any other tanker companies that are better to start with for tanker driving?

I'd say certainly check out Tidewater-Transit depending on where you are located. They take recent graduates and offer a lot.

Thanks for the reply! I am in the Houston, TX area, and have not heard of Tidewater-Transit. I will look them up on the internet - thanks!

They have a terminal in Channelview, TX. Not sure if that would work for you or not. Sounds like a solid company with a good family atmosphere.

Thanks! I applied on their website, but looked like a lot of rules and regulations for company drivers. Do you know anything about Gemini Transport?

Its hard to get on with them right out of school but Superior Carriers has a terminal in Pasadena, Tx. You would make much more starting out than at Schnieder... .47 loaded, .40 empty plus all the hourly stuff. You would also stay in hotels or at home during training. No sleeping in the truck with another driver.

Thanks wsyrob, I see they want 18 months prior experience first. Do you know anything about Gemini Transport? They are owned by the Love's truckstop company. They pay by the load, willing to take on recent graduates, all local on 12 hour shifts, $4000 sign on bonus, but they do slip seat, and some of the drivers I saw on some reviews (very few reviews) said they have been asked to complete load deliveries that extend past their 12 hours, etc...

I'm still trying to get a feel for who Gemini is, just not enough reviews coming through on the internet. I thought I would play it safe and start out with Schneider.

    Gemini is a good company.

You still might be able to get on with Superior in spite of what the web site says. They take a limited number of rookies right out of school that finish at the top of specific schools. They might consider your prior experience as well. Its worth a phone call to the Terminal manager.
