I am curious to see if there are any drivers on here that have done what I am trying to do. Come back to work after being on disability for several years and working with prescription meds in their system.

You won't drive with opiate narcotics or any that make you sleepy but most other prescriptions are okay as long as your medical condition is under control.

Thanks for the response Condo I need an honest answer. The morphine does some how leach into my blood but after all these year it does not affect my driving a POV for up to 30 hrs straight when I would run from Portland Maine to Baton Rouge. The DOT guideline actually permits it as long as the opiate is under a certain Ng/ml in your blood. I have a school counselor, a lady at Isothermal Community college swear to me that she has seen two guys that were taking more morphine then is pumped into my spinal canal pass their physical and are driving today. I wonder if she is telling me that to get me to attend their school. Not sure what her reason would be because their classes, I have been told, are habitually well attended. I think I should call her back and see if she can put me in touch with those two drivers

OP.....I don't know anything about morphine pumps so I am curios? Is the dosage much smaller than an oral or intravenous dosage? Do you have to adjust the dosage to manage your pain? If you are within the DOT guidelines than you may be employable but personally I think that most employers would view it as a potential liability if you were involved in an accident. But good luck to you!

Just go to one of the newly certified medical examiners and get a DOT physical. They will have you list the meds you are on and you will know for sure. I am not sure what they charge for the DOT physical since the new rule went into effect, but it used to cost $75.00 and you will know for sure. Not asking people for opinions or getting old knowledge. Drivers who have a valid card now might not get one the next time. Done the disability thing and have a plate and screws in my neck holding my head on.

    Good luck

You can get your doctor backing you saying you are safe to drive and possibly pass a DOT physical if it's not company supplied. The catcher is the insurance companies will heavily frown upon it and so does the FMSCA. But the FMSCA will let you slide with the proper doctor backing you. Getting your own medical card anymore is usually a very small company or if you become an owner operator. I doubt the mega carriers would allow it.

I'm in the same shape trying to get my medical card back but I'm having a hard time getting treated properly to where I can. The insurance company cut me off to the only medicine that was working. It's $550 a month I can't afford.

Of course, a morphine pump, now why didn't I think of that. I sure could have used one after some of the places I've delivered to! :biggrin_2559:

A huge difference in driving a POV and a semi tractor/trailer combo.

Stop listening to the lady at the CC, she will sell you a ship and send you up a creek after you completed the course. If you really want your answer, call around to some the DOT doctors and ask your question about the morphine.

I would even go as far as talking with a few company's HR dept. Even if you get a medical card the company's you want to go with may shy away from you.
