Switch it to manual and click a button to downshift after slowing down to the appropriate rpm/speed for the gear.

 

You're late. That era ended with the creation of cdl mills.

 

How does a driverless truck do that? It would seem that someone or something might need to determine what the proper speed and gear is.

If that person is a passenger/pilot along for the ride in an auto pilot truck then I'm not sure where the savings is since you've got to pay the "pilot" anyway.

 

Yesterday i couldn't spell truck driver, today I is one. 

 

Maybe you are underthinking this. The big theme in your argument is truck drivers are dumb and need a machine to do their job. Then on the other hand you point back to the need for a driver to still be in the truck for emergencies, complicated maneuvering, and decision making.

I seriously doubt we can have it both ways. After hours of auto-pilot operation, how alert do you think the dumb driver will be? An emergency on the road needs reaction times counted in fractions of a second, and you think a driver who doesn't even have his hands on the wheel will be able to pull that off?

So now we will have drivers with much less actual "driving" experience only handling emergencies, and difficult maneuvering. The very situations that are best handled by drivers with more actual experience, not less.

And who will these drivers be? Less work means more excuses to pay them less then current truck drivers. So an even lower common denominator of society then today's driver will be the only people attracted to these jobs.

 

This thread scares the living daylights of me with the future Truck Drivers of America. No way you Pro-Auto/Self Control Truck guys are that clueless?

Riddle me this, when you have "Self Control Truck" just what are you going to do while going down the road? Is this the Simpsons Episode all over again where Homer & Bart is on the hood of a speeding Mack just acting a fool?

If you want to just drive Auto's go ahead, your limiting your options and if you think "majority of carriers" are going to auto's then your clueless again.

 

I don't mean to a smart butt ...but you don't have a clue about what your talking about man...most emergencies aren't driver error...where did you come up with data..please show me where......do you realize what the cost would be to make a specific lane for computer driven trucks...it would be cost prohibitive....learning isn't relative to this discussion....they can't look forward and reason like a human driver can , they can't see a dangerous situation as it starts to form a half a mile in front of them....they can't do what a human driver is capable of doing......there is no such thing as a thinking machine....

This right here show your total ignorance as to how a driver does his job in a safe manner...

the real truck drivers don't get road rage either...the real driver let's that stuff roll off his back..that's called professionalism...I'm sensing some sour grapes here...if it walks like a steering wheel holder and talks like a steering wheel holder....just saying....

OK Einstein....your going down one of those "big main roads" in your home state of Iowa....your going down I-80 major interstate in that area...between Des Moines & Iowa City...it's dark ...all of a sudden a group of deer run into your path....in post 409 you glossed over a few maybe's ....well your sensors and computerized super truck can't plan the path a wild animal takes....so now what do you do....no way that a driver can gain control away from a computer fast enough to avoid this type disaster....say what you want , believe what you want my friend you and rockstar both....we aren't any closer to driver-less truck now as we are ready to head to Mars..more than likely see that come to fruition 1st....

The more you over -think the toilet bowl...the easier it is for to back-up in it..........

Ill just say this, I drive in Chicago traffic all day every day 6 days a week for work! About 3 weeks ago my employer decided to make decision and that was to sell the old 84 Mack Model R that I drove on an almost daily basis that was hooked to a dump trailer. Im still kind of upset they sold it, Mack 6 speed and a 300 Mack motor turned way up! Loud, no A/C, Camelback suspension, you know the typical Mack. I miss that thing and also again I will say there is no way I would want any type of auto in my job field! I know they are very common but I would not want one! I don't think my employer would either! Its way cheaper and way easier to fix a true manual....
