OK I know that logically I shouldn't allow the recruiter to truly reflect the company I'm asking questions about. However they are the direct representative of that company and as we know first impressions are very important. The two top companies my wife and I are planning on going to is first choice US Xpress, and second choice Covenant. Both recruiters are very personable, very polite, and very informative. What is driving me crazy is the US Xpress recruiter does not return phone calls or emails (not to mention I called her today and she put me on hold for 20 minutes) while the Covenant Recruiter is very prompt about returning phone calls and emails. If it wasn't for the potential pay difference I would make covenant my first choice. According to my recruiter and the drivers I've spoken with, USX gives a monthly .22 per mile bonus as long as you drive more than 18k a month. However a big plus on Covenant side is that my wife and I can train together. Do you have suggestions or info about recruiters or their companies that you would like to share? This was probably more of a vent session than anything else but I'm always open to more info since I'm still in the research phase and BTW Averrit is number 3 on my list right now.

Don't take this wrong but I was taught two important things about getting a job, one was if they don't call you back, call them and with that If they are rude when you call them but still want to work for the company - do the research and find someone else to talk to. The other thing is know when to find another company to talk to.

I am amazed at the amont of people who have this short list of companies to work for when there are about 100,000 trucking companies in the country that one can work for. They limit themselves for one or another reason but never drove the truck to know what would be good for them.

    .

I am in the research phase and those companies are at the top of my list but I'm open to suggestions. I've also looked into Knight, Celedon, swift, and Schneider to name a few. And yes there may be 1000's of companies out there but I can only work for 1 at a time and I have to start somewhere.

Many of these larger carriers have recruiting crusades (kind of like a job fair) that go from town to town on and off following various trade shows and driver needs. Check their web sites and see if any are coming to a larger city near you and go visit with them directly. But no, don't put too much weight on how the recruiter treats you unless they can't or won't advance you to the next stage if you're interested in them.

Take as much time researching your options as you can afford to. It takes a lot of research to get a sense of ALL of your realistic options, especially if 48 state operation is an option for you. This rules out a lot and adds in a lot that are hard to find.

Recruiter is like someone in politics makes lots of promises and never keeps any.

Yes there are 1000's of companies out here.
Yes you can only work for 1 at a time.
Yes you do have to start somewhere.

My question is would buy a house in the hood because you have to buy one somewhere?
Would you go to work in a whorehouse because you have to work somewhere?

Why are so fast to sell your soul to a bottom feeder company that will just turn you out screw you over and kick you to the curb in a heart beat just because you have to "start somewhere".
Are you doing it for "free training " ?
Are you doing it so you can train together?
You need to ask yourself if it is worth it just for a "free" 3 week course .

Myself I would not sell myself to any mega company for a few weeks of "free" anything.

Keep looking and searching I know you can find a better deal than just another meat in the seat mega .
Go to a local community collage or driving school and talk to them .
Start looking for any trucking company in a 100 radius and go talk to them in person.
Put more into this than you think is really needed and you will be better off than the average mega trainee.

This is a decision that will change your life so treat it with the attitude that it is as big of a choice as it really is .
It is not a would you like fries with that kind of choice .

I wish you the best of luck because you will need it and I hope for your sake that you make a well informed decision .
Remember trucking is what you make of it and they don't kiss you because they love you they kiss you because they are fixing to put the screws to you !!!

Navywill, we just got a message on the Qcomm today that said a 4 month driver that has completed the student phase will make .52 inc safety bonus if they have haz mat. They called it a flat rate pay package that includes hazmat pay, retention pay, holiday and vacation pay. I've heard USX pays .48 on the same package. So I don't know that I agree with your statement about USX pays more now that I've seen this. We are on a per diem plan that pays less but we don't get taxed to death by the Feds. Not sure which recruiter you talked to but Teresa was great up there when we started. She answered every question I had. Good luck!

Well I'm not sure where you got some of your information. I do appreciate you trying to look out for me in a way. I have researched local schools and talked to representatives at the school. I'm not going to any company school I'm going to a private CDL school in my area. I am treating this as a very serious decision that's why I'm doing my research with recruiters, teachers at the school, drivers for various companies as well as internet research at a lot of different sites. The fact that were fresh out of CDL school limits some of the companies we can work for. The fact that were a team limits some companies, our geographic location also limits some of the companies we can work for. But my CDL training I'm paying for myself.

BTW when I was referring to my wife training together I wasnt referring to any CDL teaining. I was referring to the initial training that every company I've looked into so far requires for new grads. Only 2 companies Ive talked to so far provide training with my wife and I together.

Again I'm not saying I know it all, because I def. Don't. What I am saying is that I take it very serious and realize this is a huge commitment. So I will say it again that if you have any suggestions I'm open and if you have any companies to suggest im willing to listen and then I will do my research.

What I was told was .48 per mile plus .22 per mile monthly bonus as long as we reach 18k miles in a calendar month. Recruiter told me this and I also confirmed this with a driver I know that works for them.

However the per diem sounds interesting...and the Covenant recruiter I'm working with has been awesome!
