I would be surprised if this question has never been asked before. What exactly is the reason why tanker trucks run shorter exhaust stacks? Ive also heard tanker trucks can't run out the bottom exhaust. Ive got some theories as to why but Im still curious about the official reason. Before anybody says "you should have done a search." I did and couldn't find anything. Thanks

They need the clearance low exhaust provide
WalterSobchak Thanks this. -
Never heard the bottom exhaust thing, but the shorter exhaust is because of clearance issues at loading racks. I've been to several places with 12'6" clearance, and one that was 12', at least according to the sign.

Just the rack issue is really the only reason. A few plants have pipes running over the road that are under 13 ft, not many but they are out there. I run bottom exhaust but someone screwed up when they bought my truck because you have to breathe exhaust fumes when working around the pump or compressor. I brought this issue up and they are working to resolve it.WalterSobchak Thanks this.

Hi Walter, back in the day, when trucks used to belch clouds of black smoke (which I always thought was cool), it was important for trucks pulling reefer or van trailers to get the smoke up and over the trailer. Now trucks don't smoke near as much, so many companies have bottom exhaust to save money on the hardware. With a tanker, the short stack is probably a clearance issue, as they generally deliver to places that have many low obstructions. I wasn't aware of tankers not allowed bottom exhaust.WalterSobchak Thanks this.

The main thing is clearance at the loading racks. I loaded at a place where some truck with high exhausts and 2 trucks with condos had to go around then back into the racks. I know of some places where they would not have been allowed to do that because of the way the place is set up.WalterSobchak Thanks this.

Some hazmat places don't allow bottom exhaust due to flammable fumes. Other than that I haven't heard of any reason.
WalterSobchak Thanks this. -
That's what I would think. in case of any flammable liquid leaking, they would not want it to hit a hot exhaust under truck.WalterSobchak Thanks this.
