The driver that had trained me burned out in 2 months and had take 8 days off before going back in the road. One thing I see about OTR than local is that OTR companies offer nicer equipments, more opportunities, and a chance to make more money but I dont know about the benefits part. OTR make you have less time for your personal problems, families, etc. I might check a regional position if I cant get a local job.

Not sure what kind of presence unions have down your way, but they are the best jobs to be had up here...

    - Start at $18.75/hr, ends at $25/hr
    - Overtime after 8hrs
    - Paid insurance
    - Paid holidays
    - Paid vacation
    - Paid birthday (off)
    - Pension
    - Union backing if the company wrongs you.

Yeah there's downsides (dues, politics) as well but, the upsides are worth it IMO. Also most require some kind of experience.
If any industry needs Unions these days, it's ours...

I got a local job driving an end dump straight out of driving school. That was in 2002. I've never driven O T R. Just apply until you get a hit. Everyone is desperate for drivers.

Not true at all. I got a local job right out of school, as did 4 other guys from my class. I'm doing grocery store deliveries, 2 are in trash, and one guy doing home daily regional stuff. I'm making more now than many of the recruiters were telling us we'd make going OTR. Even if I did make a little less, seeing my wife and baby every night would make it worth every missing penny. I have nothing against OTR, I think I'd like a lot of things about it, but to trade my life as I know it and never see my family for less money is nothing short of insane.

Finding a good local job depends on the area you are in and the qualifications they require. I wouldnt want to do local reefer, but if thats what I could find, I would do it.

I drive local. I could not bear going back to OTR. Gone three weeks at a time just to get home for three days! More like three nights only.

I drive local in Chicago traffic! But I am home every night. I was home on my Wife's birthday. I was home both weekends to see her acting in Oliver!

I was home for my Mom's 75th birthday party.

And I was home dine on my Wife's home made pizza, do dishes, vacuum up dog hair and sleep in my own bed.

Another driver at my company waited a year and a half to get into this position from OTR.

It aint for everybody, but neither is OTR.
