For me personally, I am reluctant to begin a career in trucking when winter is approaching. Those beginning months, when a new driver is so unskilled, it would seem like icy conditions should be avoided.
But postponing a career for another 6 months is hard.
Those of you that went through your training during the winter.. was it a big deal?
Best time of year to begin OTR career?

Don't postpone it; get started. If it was so dangerous, trucking companies wouldn't hire new CDL drivers during the winter months. Trucking companies hire new CDL drivers 24/7, 12 months a year.
Didn't you ask that question last spring? You haven't started yet? Get a move on, the road is calling you! -
I think now would be a great time to start as its going to start cooling off in most places . if your comfortable you learn easier. That and going into the winter it may benefit you being with a trainer for a while in inclement weather
Chinatown Thanks this. -
If tomorrow is always a better time.
Then it will never come.
There's always tomorrow.
Don't worry about what the Season is.
You can always over think it. -
That is an excellent point I hadn't considered

That's a silly way to look at things.
If you're soo worried about driving in winter I'd actually wait to start your career during winter, that way you'll have an experienced driver in the seat next to you to help you when you need it most.
For me, I started driving in late September. My training was done by late October.. basically I was out a month solo before winter hit and I'll tell you this... winter is not fun, hitting ice is the scariest experience I've had.
We're steering wheel holders throughout the year, once winter hits is when we before truck drivers.
However we're all noobs at winter during one time or another.
If you need a job, just start already and don't worry about it. -
OP.. you'd be surprised with how many people refuse to drive in what they beleive are unsafe winter conditions .. seems those from the east side of the US think chains are a dirty word..

If you're going out with a trainer, winter is the best time to do it. Better to have someone experienced in the jump seat talking you through situations and giving you pointers than to have to train in summer and have to figure that first winter out on your own with only 6 months or less solo time like some of us did.
Unless, of course, you go with one of these idiot companies that has a 6 month noob training you and then it's BOTH of your first winter. Then you're screwed twicemisc Thanks this. -
I started in winter, worked out great.
I'm confused though. It's not winter. If you wait six months it will be winter.
What was the question again?Skydivedavec and ramblnman Thank this. -
My thoughts exactly.
