Well, I have not figure out how I'm going to get or whom I'm going with to get the official hours and practical for 1) Pre-Inspection, 2) Skills Test and 3) Road Test so I went ahead, self studied. This morning I took the 3 basic tests and obtained my permit for Class A CDL in Illinois. As I was leaving, the clerk noted, good luck and you can now drive with anyone who has held a Class A CDL License in Illinois for one year or more. Yeah!

Anyhow, I'm going to start fishing through the "Companies Providing CDL Training & Jobs" because rather than just sit in a classroom; does this give me a one up on getting in with a company that would get me going on a kind of a "Work and Pay" program for the next 4 to 5 weeks until I can officially take the final three (3) practical tests.

Of course this is all taking place in Illinois and I was hoping to stay in Illinois to accomplish this idea. Why pay $3,000 to $4,000 to a school if I can get going right away and be of some value. I talked to several schools and they told me they won't let me drive until I sit in a classroom for at least at week even though I already have a permit.

I might be wrong but you might be trying to circumvent the process. An accredited school is going to be a minimum of 160 hours. Some of that is classroom time. A lot of starter companies want to see that you went to a school and not get it all on your own. Call a couple of companies that hire students and ask what their requirements are. 4000 for a new career isn't really expensive compared to other professions. Good luck to you.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but a permit does not mean much, you are not close to being able to just jump in a truck and drive. You have a lot more to learn. first you need to know the laws and how to pretrip before you think about driving. No company or school will let you in the truck until you can do a proper, pretrip. So you will sit in a classroom weather you go to a private school or company training. I recommend a private school. I went to wolf in Schaumburg IL, cost $1900 and i found a good local delivory job after graduation. If you get company training you will be a slave to the company for a year.. i dont know of any of the big companies that train in IL. roehl trains in Gary Indiana and Appelton WI, probibly the closest you will get.

Just trying not to be a sheep. The trainer at the school I talked with noted it was great I already obtained my permit. I can spend my time working on any endorsements instead of working on the basics for the permit and applying for jobs while the others work on their permits. I'm just a little ignorant about the process so I'm trying to education myself and not just be herded along without really knowing. You know the saying, "Hind sight is 20/20".

How did you like Wolf? I called yesterday, but the girl answering the phone did not impress me too much. Kind of scared me away. She seemed unsure of herself and explained the 4 week program can't really be finished in 4 weeks, but then couldn't tell me how long it would take to finish. I saw the website and ads, it's cheap. Seems like you liked it. Any other comments about the school?

I liked it overall. its not perfect, but for the price I was satasfied. the bad parts are that the office is very disorganized and they are pretty low tech, no simulator, basic computer programs, and kind of old trucks. Also you spend more time in class than driving, but most schools are like that. But the teachers are good, they will teach you everything you need to know to get the CDL. Most of. the classroom time is focused on the pretrip inspection. About half of the classroom time is on a computer at your own pace. You have to use the schools computers but you can come and go whenever you want until you have enough hours completed. The classroom time with the instructor is semi flexable. Classroom is about twenty people. Driving for skills and road driving is one on one. You can go up to ten hours a day. The program is 160 hours. If you go full time you can finish in 4 or 5 Weeks. It takes longer if you are picky about scheduling your drive time, since drive time is one on one you have to make a set driving schedule with the office and they only let you drive 3 hours per day. Took me 8 weeks to finish, but i was working full time and scheduling school part time around work.

    Excellent choice, Millis Transfer!

    Also:
    Schneider
JBS Carriers - sends you to Roadmasters.
    Midwest-Coast Transport - coast-to-coast refrigerated
Southern Refrigerated Transport - coast-to-coast refrigerated

Make some good money with Schneider tanker division. Ask the recruiter about their CDL school program and tanker division.

I think that Prime,FFE,and H.O. Wolding also offer schooling? I personally would probably go with Millis out of them all. Never really read a whole lot of bad about them,so they must be doing something right....lol. ;-)
