If you're an o/o and you're the only one driving your truck and you're on with a wrench, get a good old truck. I have a 2000 kenworth t600 with a cat engine that I keep for myself, i get 6 mpg off of it. but I also own 2 2010 international prostars with cummins engines. I have them governed at 62 and I'm getting 7 mpg that I have for my drivers. They're not going to care for the truck the same way I care for my kenworth, so I bought those trucks for the warranty. Thankfully, I haven't had to use it. But its the pace of mind that it's there. On the same note, I still put away maintenance money in an interest earning account, if I ever have to use it, it's there. Success in this business is all about money management, lame management, equipment and drivers, the only one you don't really have direct control over is the equipment, so you have to be prepared, whether old or new.

I can't agree more. I drive a 2014 Cascadia Evo and average 8.1 mpg. When mt or under 30k lbs over 8.3mpg. That's a heck of a factor.
-
I pull a 48 foot flat with a 2013 Cascadia (company truck), average quarterly mpg=7.57 cruising at 64mph....and also, all I hear from older truck owners are 5-6mpg.....
Also, everyone and their mother recommends getting a pre 2003 truck, for mpg's and reliability with a Detroit engine....well, most of those are over 1 million mile trucks....AND their selling for over 20K (plus the inevitable rebuild of engine, trans and rears....not to mention all the other sh.t that's bound to be falling off of them) so were really talking 50K.....you can get a newer truck ...'10 or '11 for not much more than that....so what's a new O/O to do????? -
Well you gotta do your home work but I bought a 2000 this spring with a series 60 just shy of 500000miles (ECM verified) and bobtailed home at 9.8 mpg, so what's your next excuse for not buying an older truck???
-
No excuses chief, no attitude necessary either, not saying it's impossible, just saying it's getting harder. Don't want just any truck either, as I have certain specs in mind for my application.....
How much did you pay ? What specs? What will you be pulling?...
Congrats on the truck, good luck! -
Yep your right, sorry, I paid $29k 2000 Argosy 12.7 470hp, 13OD, 3:90, 3way locks, 110" condo unit. Brought it home, didn't have to but I put a webasto heater in it, pulled the 11R24.5 rubber, swapped out to 11R22.5 fronts and 455/55/22.5 super single drives (got a hell of a deal from a newer wrecked tractor) The truck does light loads 30k, flat deck normally 200-300 mile trips hauling pipeline equipment all highway, 2-3 times a year depending on business 3500 mile round trip. But your right there are trade offs, I didn't need a condo unit or that much hp I'm abit of a slug on the highway, and I really like CATs never had a Detroit before but I'm really starting to like it.

I can't take too much credit, my Freightliner dealer helped me out lots, anytime I find a candidate I give them the vin and we review the specs and the shop guys give me input, I've got 3 other trucks all shakers and they know what the trucks need to be able to do. No that was USD.
