when i talked to the recruiter today she said that the 10 years is only for driving jobs where you held a CDL. I asked her specifically because I used to drive light duty tow trucks but didnt have to have a CDL for that job.

Edit: BUT by past experience with hiring recruiters, just be prepared. They tend to say whatever it takes to get you to commit.

Just wondering, but did you specifically ask her if that is the case when you fill out the paper app in Sprimo?

At least if you did that, if you had a surprise you could at least say "I was told -this- about this situation by -him/her-".

Yes I did. But there are people on this forum saying they want 10 years worth once you get there regardless. Again your best bet is to prepare as much as you can and call your recruiter (better yet email so its easier to document) to verify. I spent the day going through old tax records pulling past years' W2's and getting as much as possible ready to take with me to SPRIMO just in case. I know how much of a pain in the 4$$ it is to gather up 10 years worth of on and off employment and part time temporary and seasonal jobs. I would rather be over prepared than under prepared. Have they given you a target date to start orientation yet?

I'll make this easy for everyone. According to the FMCSA:

    Part 383
COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE STANDARDS; REQUIREMENTS AND PENALTIES
    < 382 | 384 >
    printer friendly version
§ 383.35: Notification of previous employment.

    (a) Any person applying for employment as an operator of a commercial motor vehicle shall provide at the time of application for employment, the information specified in paragraph (c) of this section.
    (b) All employers shall request the information specified in paragraph (c) of this section from all persons applying for employment as a commercial motor vehicle operator. The request shall be made at the time of application for employment.
    (c) The following employment history information for the 10 years preceding the date the application is submitted shall be presented to the prospective employer by the applicant:
    (1) A list of the names and addresses of the applicant's previous employers for which the applicant was an operator of a commercial motor vehicle;
    (2) The dates the applicant was employed by these employers; and
    (3) The reason for leaving such employment.
    (d) The applicant shall certify that all information furnished is true and complete.
    (e) An employer may require an applicant to provide additional information.
    (f) Before an application is submitted, the employer shall inform the applicant that the information he/she provides in accordance with paragraph (c) of this section may be used, and the applicant's previous employers may be contacted for the purpose of investigating the applicant's work history.

That is directly from the FMCSA website. Here is the link: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/383.35

Just to clarify, the regulations say nothing about if you have had a cdl or not, it says ALL Persons applying for employment...

Not trying to be a jerk about this, just don't want anyone to have a surprise when you get there. The first few days/weeks are stressful enough just having to learn so much so fast. Trying to deal with this from 100's of miles from home is not easy and adds lots of stress to the situation.

I hope this helps resolve the question about the past 10 years of employment history :)

My last two years before I started here I was self employed and lost money. All they wanted to see was the schedule C from my tax returns for those years. Otherwise just claim unemployed ;)

Not yet, I haven't applied yet. My plan was to get to the program in the end of October and start the process six weeks before. Now I think I will start the process right now, and tick a recruiter off for wanting to start so far from the application date so I can get the ducks in a row.

I have to say, I'm surprised that a company that is so transcendent in the training potential drivers to become employees business would have such a discrepancy between what the recruiters say and reality.
