What do folks typically do for internet access and how much do they typically spend?
Pay for access at truck stops?
Find free WiFi?
Use a portable WiFi modem/my-fi?
Other?
Monthly costs?
Any good advice?
Thanks!
Internet Access? $

I remember reading flying j/pilot had a yearly plan for $150,can't comment on how good it is since I'm not a trucker YET.

Truck stop wifi really stinks and doesn't work when you need it most. I use my smart phone (Verizon data plan) as a mobile hotspot with my laptop. Very reliable and costs me about $20 per month for the data.

I use Verizon but it gets pricey because I watch movies and shows online. Unlimited talk and text with 10 Gigs of data is costing me $150 per month. I have tried using truck stop wifi when able but it's usually garbage.
-
Very cheap, you must not be using a lot of data.paul_4lp Thanks this.

I use truck stop wood and I do not pay for it. Hehe.

There is a section on the forum for Data/Cellphone/Etc questions.
Assume you are talking OTR trucking.
Wifi in truck stops suck but I'd likely still pay the yearly subscription on one. (Will need to test more when I'm on the road.)
For reliable internet you'll want to use cellphone data.
Verizon has the best coverage (From what I'm read) But everyone will have areas of no service.
A cellphone booster can help this. (Around $3-500+)
Mifi's don't change towers well so if you're teaming this isn't always the best option compared to using a cellphone with a hotspot. (Or what I'll likely do an Ipad.)
Unless you have an old unlimited data package you will be paying a lot to have speed.Igneouss Thanks this. -
I used to have SPRINT mobile hotspot and it BLEW.....not I use AT&T mobile hotspot and it is a hell of a lot better. $10 per GB. Pretty good service I have been in just a few areas where it doesn't work but for the most part extremely satisfied.

I used Pilot/ FlyJ for the last year ... Paid $100 in points & 49.99 in cash , works ok with Hulu / Netflix if your in line of sight of the wifi ( park as close as you can to the building) some truckstops are good ...and some are just awful ... If I got over .60 gbs I could usually watch without much buffeting Phone plans will eat up you data fast !
