Greetings to all,
I was a police officer for twenty three years and got buned out and left. I am starting my last week of truck driving school at TDI. I have pre-hires from several different companies. I have a TWIC card, Double-Tripple endorsement, tanker and hazmat endorsement. I would like to drive tanker and Schenider says they can give me a job with training in Pittsburg PA. I am also looking at HOWoling, US express, and Werner. I am unsure if I should dive right into tanker driving or work trailer over the road for a few years to get experience before diving into tanker. I'm 46, Male divorced with three kids two out of house and third 13 Y/O. I have been off work for over one month due to being fired. Just looking for and informed opinion. Thanks to all. I'm proud to be joining the other PProfessional drivers on the road. Thank you.

I'd take Schneider in a heartbeat over the others, especially if they're offering you tanks. They'll train you on the proper procedures for driving a tanker, trust me. You'll make a lot more money yanking a tank for The Big a Orange than you would with any of the others you mentioned.US Express from what I read is ok if you want to team. Werner pays horribly low to start. As for Wolding,I really don't know much about them. I'd take the Schneider gig, learn the ins and outs of tanker hauling for about 2 years, then hook up with say a fuel hauler locally and you'll be making some serious coin....Good luck my friend!

I think Schneider has a good reputation for training. I have had friends that pulled tanks at Quality Carrier as owner operators getting paid a percentage of the load, and made above average money. Having tanker experience could lead to above average earnings in the future. Also, those friends told me they were treated with some respect at shippers and receivers. Btw, if you consider not pulling a tank, I suggest checking out Crete Carrier. They put you with a trainer for 8 weeks. They pay better than most van companies and I think they are better than similar big companies. Good luck.

I would look into getting the best training possible year 1, money in this industry will come with time, experience, determination, and a little luck. Good luck.

Hi mad_hatter, You didn't say where you are located, with the companies you mentioned, you must be in the mid-west, or central US. Your situation seems good for a career in trucking, and there are literally dozens of good companies to go with. HO Wolding is a good company, Millis is good, Schneider, I'm not so sure about. They've been around a while, but seem to have a huge turn over. It's a driver's market now, and after school, you shouldn't have any problem getting on with anybody. However, you say you were fired, that could throw up a red flag, as companies are cautious of anyone terminated from a job. Might be a little hard getting around that. Good luck, and welcome aboard!
