Do Any OTR Truckers Still Use Atlas's?

My road atlas is from 1986. Oh, oh, when did they put a scale here,& there's a bypass around Milwaukee now? When did Ill. go to 80K?

The atlas shows the scale in Shiprock, NM which has been torn down and doesn't show the scale in Vaughn, NM which was open earlier this year.

 

The RM Motor Carrier Atlas is essential. Lots of things you could live without; this isn't one of them. And a ??......did Blair/Gretchen get the ban hammer for remarks in this thread???????

 

Hi PR, I believe at the bottom or way in the back of new atlas's, there's a note encouraging people to contact them if there is an addition or discrepancy.

 

When you get your RM road atlas, be sure to spring for the large laminated version. It doubles as a waterproof dining table.

 

Yes it is....all of those things are tools.....they help of course. BUT , this day and age doesn't come into play here....all of the major cities , most major routes , and all of the "old roads" are located just where they are now , and just where they were.....10 , 20 , 30 years ago....sure there have been some changes , up-dates , improvements made....But driving hasn't....a driver still needs to be able to trip plan , and use a map....plus ( Now I'll be accused of being an Old FART ) , but , a phone call to the person ( recieving clerk ) or the facility that is your destination as soon as it's possible is always a good idea. By doing this , you can get info from the folks that are local / in the area as to any construction going on , any low bridges , parking restrictions , etc.......map reading skills , along with an open line of communication will always help you to get your load delivered much easier..

 

I use my atlas all the time. And Im closing in on 15 years. There are still some roads I haven't been on.

 

Absolutely. Although finding a payphone could be an issue these days.

 

Lol semi....u got me beat...mines an 04....which I finally broke down&bought to replace my '87....

But I really don't need it anymore....we have one of older drivers(yup even older than me.lol)go into dispatch last month.....and he knows EVERYTHING.....in fact when Rand or Mcnally get lost.......they call HIM!!!!

I have no earthly idea how I have managed since 73 w/out him! LMAO

 

I used my atlas on every trip.

I fully embraced the GPS as a tool and used it every time the truck moved. My route planning always began with the GPS directions and 99% of the time I followed every turn it told me to. But, it was important to always flip open your atlas and verify that it's the way you want to go. Just because the GPS says you can take a certain route, doesn't always make it the smartest route to take.
