Remember that early windows also wasn't an operating system. It was just a gui running on top of dos.

Even windows 95 to ME ran on top of dos.

Microsoft was first, in 1975. They formed to sell BASIC interpreters for the various hobbyist computers.
Apple was formed in 1976 to sell the Apple Computer kit.

Altair 8800~ What we used know as PCs compared to what they are now is scary.

The real joke about Apple and Microsoft was they both took their operating GUI (graphic user interface) from IBM. Then Apple tried and failed to sue Microsoft for stealing the IBM GUI, as Apple was trying to say that the idea of a GUI was theirs alone.

Apples when they first came out were very clumsy. Difficult to operate, some of them took a while to start up. The Microsoft windows platform started right up yet had a semi annoying autoexec.bat and config.sys file that needed a little tweaking to get the puter to run correctly. Everyone has it easy nowadays. Turn on the switch and plug and play takes care of the headaches.

Another headache from Apple. They tried and failed miserably to make money by having proprietary expansion slots. If you made a card to work with Apple, you the manufacturer had to pay a premium to make your card work and use their slot. Or, make a card and supply the drivers and it would work with any pc compliant device.

For those of you sharing age of computer, dont forget the old Texas Instruments computers with a cassette drive.

What I find interesting right now is. 3D printers are in the stage right now of what computers were back in the 1990's. They are still a bit clumsy, yet some day no one will be able to go with out their own 3d printer.

Xerox not IBM. The mouse idea was also stolen from them.

i don't see how we have it easy these days.

given that every other msft platform is a failure. windows 8 being their BIGGEST.

other then typing on this forum. i have yet to get anything to work. i,m not real happy about having to actually fill out a paper log. can't get my cell plugged in. my printer is iffy at best. and it's brand new win8 compliant.

add to that i had to actually install a media program so i could watch sketchy dvd movie. no media playback unless you want to buy the media center pack for $100. and apparently that don't work on ALL windows 8 versions.

having to resort to google just to figure out how to do that basic something windows has provided for years right at your fingertips.

my life isn't easy one bit.

Calling windows 8 a failure when its one of their best selling OS is kind of hard. The only major issue with windows 8 is the start menu and since a free -$5 program can fix that its not a big issue either. I have 3 of my 6 computers on it and I'm quiet pleased with it beyond the start menu.

Also if you compare trying to configure a mouse or a printer back in dos or windows 3.1 to what its like now. We have it easy.
