That is true. But then again, you wasted your time, and ran free miles to/from the Cat scale, and most likely since you didn't deliver the load...they'd probably find a reason not to reimburse the Cat scale fee.
You are a "cup half full" guy, and I am a "cup half empty" guy on this particular situation. Both ways are good to look at....but for me...I am not wasting my time on a woulda-shoulda-coulda load when it is the shippers greed that made the trailer that heavy in the first place.

Been awhile since I've been that way, so I'm just basing this on Google.

Looks like he could also scale in Ashland, Va at exit 89 or exit 92 without running over a DOT scale.

Only DOT scale I see in the area is on 64, so he should be able to scale wherever he wants and be close enough to take the load back if he can't get it legal.

Not even sure how to respond to that. Basically you are saying you will refuse to haul anything that ha the potential to be overweight. You may be in the position to do that but a company driver who tries pulling that is going to be shown the door real quick and is real bad advice Especially if it's an account that has every load go out heavy but has a good history of loading it legal.

If you aren't getting paid the additional miles for going back and forth and/or detention for the time to get it reworked then that's something you need to be aware of before going to work for a company

Hi FatDaddy, I agree with White Dog 100%. This poor person already had a crappy week, and now has to diddle around with this "mystery" load that is for sure going to be unscaleable, and once they signs the bills, it's their baby. And I have news for you, if a company did that to me, they wouldn't have to show me the door, I'd be through it already.

I'm curious to know how you know it's unscalable

I'm only speculating, because everybody else probably turned it down and they were going to stick the new guy with it. And they told them not to get fuel, so it's probably already heavy in the nose. ( ran them straight in with no singles in the front)

I believe he was told not to go with full tanks. I know I'm being nit pickey here but if you ever run beer most companies will tell you the same thing. As is, I have speculated myself he was picking up at Purina and yes those loads are heavy but usually legal and they have an axle scale on site where you don't sign until you are satisfied with the weight.

I just feel it's bad advice to tell a company driver to turn down a load due to speculation

they will probably scale you in and out on the property i wouldn't show up with less fuel than you want to be able to fill too. in otherwords show up with 3/4's of a tank rather than less than a 1/4 becouse they will probably put you as close to your legal max for the amount of fuel you have on at the time you load.
