I made a point of asking my uncle ( Transport Engineer) where I should be and he said thru traffic should be in any lane other than far to right - it was designed for those merging on and off the freeway. Therefore, I stay one left of the granny lane in metro areas. Don't like my speed? GO AROUND!

IMHO...and I say that seriously; If....you are intent on getting on the freeway... get your ### UP TO SPEED...& merge AT FREEWAY SPEED!. DO NOT MOSEY...THEN LOOK in your mirror, and go " Oh gosh...there's a truck "...!!!! This applies to ALL 4-wheelers.!!! For Gods sakes...pull head out of ###. It's really, really simple.

    DOH!!!

When you see trucks side by side driving slowly the same speed, they're trying to block traffic to keep others from getting in front of them. They actually feel they are doing the world a favor. They feel all other motorists are in a conspiracy against truckers. If they drive slowly side by side, it breaks up the conspiracy and ruins the 4-wheeler's big game plan to destroy the truckers lives.

Why is it so hard for some people? When I am in my four-wheeler coming down a ramp I look way before getting on the Interstate, find my hole and gas it and yes that sometimes includes full throttle acceleration. What really gets me going are the cars that stop on the ramp even after I have slowed way down to let them in, scared I guess.

My standard reply is..." if you're gonna play in traffic..... 'stand on it'...or get effing hell off the ###### freeway". And yes...I've seen ####### drivers STOP.....then look. I say HIT THEM. One less to screw around with. And as we professional drivers all know.....there is a point of " commitment"...whearin you decide IF....you will or WON"T stop for the red light, move over for the ####### thinking about merging w/head in rectal cavity...etc.etc Y'all know what I mean. I suck it up & look down the fwy.....hoping no nasty noises ensue.

    No...?

Why can 4 wheelers exit off the interstate from the left lane, across 4 lanes of traffic, at the last minute, without looking...........

But can't merge on the interstate in that empty quarter mile space behind me?

Have you really seen that?? I have never seen a tractor-trailer rig in a car pool lane in Northern California, and rarely ever seen one in any lane but the merging lane or the lane immediately to the left. The other lanes are "Money Lanes" --- that is the truckers get ticketed for it. BTW, I now live in Sacramento, and I believe Sacramento Drivers are the worst in the state -- and they have some of the worse freeways like where 50/99/80 and 5 all meet. Before I lived here I thought it would be a mellow place to drive, but now I see it is really deceptive. I'll keep a look out for those trucks in the Car Pool lanes, must be happening in Oakland --- heck those guys will even do "Sideshows" on the freeways in Oakland.

Your uncle is right on this one, and it just makes good sense for semi trucks that are not planning to exit anytime soon to stay in the center lanes--especially in metro areas that have a lot of traffic entering/exiting. Even in non-metro areas where there are more than two lanes, it still makes more sense for a semi truck to take the center lane since it is a lot safer for both the semi driver and for 4-wheelers who have not mastered the art of merging onto a freeway. It won't come as a surprise to you, but I would have to say that probably 80% or so of my fellow 4-wheel drivers really do not know how to merge into traffic coming onto the freeway, particularly when a semi-truck is involved. I've seen some pretty scary merges between trucks and cars!

Forget the complainers--semi trucks in the center lane are a sensible and safe idea.

Yes, there are some scary merges out there. And it is a fact that the majority of accidents involve a lane change. But in traffic conditions that are such that you are able to run the speed limit, if a truck can't run the limit, it should be in the granny lane. I run through Little Rock on I30 quite a bit and seem to always end up behind a truck in the center lane that can't run over 60 or maybe 62 mph. Since the center lane is actually the fast lane for trucks, I think this is being inconsiderate to the other drivers. Also causes safety problems as other trucks end up having to use the slow lane to pass.
