Not to familiar with trucks this old, but we just recently purchased this 94 binder quad axle dump truck. It has a eaton tranny, 8LL. It takes near perfection to shift it without severe grinding. One of the drivers said the synchros are bad, mechanic says not, as it goes between high and mid range no problem. Mechanic says this is typical of this year range eatons. Is this so, what can be done to fix it if possible and if it can't be, how about swapping it with a different year/make one? Thank you.
eaton tranny, 94 binder, grinds like a mother.....

It is not a synchronized transmission, so your mechanic is right, the only synchro is for the range selector. If it shifts range without grinding, the synchro is working. They were a little picky on lube, I'd drain it and refill with the recommended SAE50 trans lube. I've seen a few hard to shift trans that the owners put 75-90 gear lube in them, changed the oil with SAE50 and it was better.
greaseburner Thanks this. -
8LL weren't know to be hard shifting transmissions so I would think you have some sort of an issue. They do need a 500 or so drop in rpm. So you have to shift them a little slower than some others.

What kind of engine is in front of the 8ll? I noticed with my last truck, it had a cummins 444, and it was touchy to shift as well. The way the rpm on the cummins was, made it so you had to be very precise. It took a little getting used to, but once a guy got used to it, it wasnt bad.

N14 cummins. what scares me is i'll have a driver in it.....

A friend of mine had the exact same issue with a similar truck/engine/tranny combo. Turned out the bell housing bolts were loose. Tightened them up and all was well.
