I actually got sick of paying $125.00 a month for 2 normal house phone lines (1 for fax and computer dsl, the other for normal calls)
with all the BS "fees" and taxes they add to the bill. I signed up for Vonage phone service at 25 bucks a month for unlimited calling and got the internet through my cable tv provider.
Vonage does seem to lock up once in a while and I have to disconnect all the cords to the box for a couple of minutes to get the system to reset but its a minor annoyance compared to spending a hundred extra bucks per month.
I live an area where their is little cell tower coverage so switching to cell phones only would not work for me.

Okay, one problem here.
I have a cell, and I do use it to call the company. I do, however, keep the number blocked, so they can't get it. The reason for this is I drive local, and always begin and end at the same place. When I get done with my deliveries and my assigned pickups, I call in and tell my dispatcher, to which the reply is usually "Good. Come on in.", except in the rare occasion of a late call-in in my area. Then it's "Go get that, and then come on in."
The problem I have is that I could be headed back to the terminal, and if he had my phone number he'd be calling me to go 50 miles out of the way to go make some other lazy schmuck's pickups for him. Sorry, I have a bit of the union mentality there. I'm not picking up anybody elses slack. -
I worked for a Company used my phone but some also had a Co.phone more buddies #s on them than Cos.Well no more Co.phones they require you to use your own.Saves them a lot of money.Real reason for costs.Well every one in the Co and thier kids has one.Workers should learn to say NO.Hey Aftershock in Houston Tx.all the pay phones are either broke or a drug dealer and lot lizzards using it for bussiness perposes.I think if a Co.requires you to have a cell they should furnish it or pay the bill

In THAT case -- I'd agree.
My situation was much better,
See Below.
Places like that scare the excrement outta me!
Especially with a decked load of brand new motorcycles -- crated.
Too heavy to just slip 'em off, so they need the Big truck truck driver. If they brought their own, as they so often do, I'd be expendable.
Parked for the evening -- sweet dreams.
Would you rather have a cell phone then?
I'd call the local police and inform them where I was and what I had on the trailer. It's much easier for a squad car to cruise by every now and then, than to do all the investigation and paperwork that goes with a theft --- or worse.
They'll often thank a driver for doin' it.
Yes sir, I agree.
I drove for a company that required some drivers to have phones -- and they paid for it.
Others -- me included -- were provided with pagers that the company provided.
It was a company that when required to jump, we asked "how high" half way up.
For SOME loads failure was VERY seldom an option.
High dollar stuff that HAD to arrive in at LEAST in as good condition as when it was loaded. NO scratches, dings, bumps ,..... etc.
I had a load once that consisted of ONE motorcycle and a ONE of a kind, in a 48' trailer headed for a calendar photo shoot.
Gold plated brake rotors.
Imagine that.
DO NOT APPLY THE BRAKES.
Value?
The BoL stated in excess of one-million dollars.
Don't screw up -- driver.
** G uL p ! ***
No sir -- I won't.
Good thing I didn't either.
Our schedules changed so often, it was like a box-0-chocolates -- y'all ALWAYS knew y'all'd never know whatcher gonna get.
Or, sumthin' like that.
The SOONER we were made aware of the changes, the better for EVERYone -- all around. It worked like a team.
Paying for my own cell phone would be a small sacrifice for driving for a company like that. IMO.
They weren't known to be calling for trivial stuff. If they called -- it would be important.
Calling truck-to-truck was handy as well. We could plan where to hook up if we were coming from different directions. Sure made the job a LOT easier.

I wouldn't be out there anymore without my cell phone!

Agreed. Definitely put a cell phone on the "to pack" list when you're going to orientation. As crowded as some places are, as long as some wagons are, and as much as governments look to trucks for revenue, cell phones are definitely worth having.

I canned my home phone years ago. I get 1400 minutes a month with no roaming, long distance and free incoming calls from any number. let them call me, it's free. I may be to easy to get along with, but I don't care if they call. It's easier than when we all had pagers and had to look for a pay phone. Get the right plan for what you need and it's pretty cheap.
