Deere goes through that just about once a decade in the Waterloo, IA. area (tractor works) ever since the big lay-off in 82' - 86'. That is why I can't understand any of these outsource businesses relying solely on contracts to Deere. But some times they have no other choice----Deere can be like Wal-Mart in a way....they tell a lot of places "if you want our business, you work strictly for us"...and if they ain't cutting it to Deere standards, they are out the door.

The smart businesses around here will contract work through Deere, Caterpillar, Terex, Unverferth, etc... ALL also unstable at times...but atleast at DIFFERENT times, so there is still work if one of them starts slowing down or laying off.

I don't know, but one of those companies was recruiting at my school, and the representative said you can have felonies in your past, but they don't want to see that you've been job hopping. Apparently some consider it a capital offense (or think that free enterprise only applies to them).

AMEN!!! Trucking companies always over look their turn-over....yet demand the best of the best of the best. Some even advertise in qualifications "No more than 3 jobs in the past 7 years" (or similar)---but if you ask THEM how many drivers have you had in the past 7 years, they want no part of the answer. I bet it's more than 2 per truck in any given year....and it's not always the 'drivers' fault as the company would have you believe.

Hi camionneur, isn't that crazy? What a turnaround from years ago. I've probably had 50 jobs in my life, at least, not all trucking, but quite a few. Heck, I had 2 different jobs in a week once, but not one felony. Matter of fact, it was considered somewhat of a bonus that you had been around. You had experience. Now, it's ok you are a convicted felon, but job hopping is bad. I know, job hopping shows you might not be around, but if these crummy companies would treat you right in the 1st place, there'd be no job hopping. My 1st trucking job, I didn't get paid the best, drove an R model Mack, that rode like a lumber wagon, but the boss was a sweetheart of a guy, and I didn't want to quit, because I didn't want to hurt his feelings. (but eventually did anyway after 5 years)

Must be, that crazy people want us to assimilate to their craziness, I suppose temp agencies are the only true revolving door that works both ways for "at will" employment, instead of the whole "we can fire you for any reason, but you have no excuse for quitting (even though we encourage you to break the law)", these days—can't seem to keep up with history repeating itself.

Yeah, I guess they don't think they're any better than the next company with high turnover, for the wrong reasons, mostly (competing on the wrong level—let's all race to the bottom, to move that much farther forward, and pretend the earth isn't round, as reciprocity is nobody's business—it's like the same #### in a different format, nevermind what day it is).

I can't say for sure, but am looking at my 3rd job in 1 year, and once again have higher hopes for being allowed to do my somewhat generic job there, just as I had for the other two (and was careful in selecting those)... other than being a careful driver myself, and doing my best to work things out that take away from this, before leaving, maybe I know what to look for by now (still, I am not a cynic, and am as humble as trucking allows for, though my religion is no more forgiving than the standards I follow, and company policies might be on the same page if they too would follow them). If not, I'm giving up and working as a temp, again (which is what got me into trucking, so there I go). Well excuse-moi, erring on the side of caution is a steep learning curve, and I'll take the hit instead of hitting someone you all should love... anyone?

I haven't successfully meditated away from doing something industrial for a living (or being a consumer all the same), so this is the best I can do for you, too. I'd like to think we can all do better, that's really my goal in job hopping (well, I have more than one hoop to jump through, maybe I should wear a jumpsuit—pelvis has left the building—you can't make this stuff up, impersonating a trucker, make it 'till you fake it)...
