I am currently attending school to get my cdl and i graduate on sept 18th so i have been looking at all of the ads on craigs list and other sources to find companies in my area (las Vegas NV) that hire recent grads. It seems like every company out there is looking for drivers for their southwest region fleet. apparently this covers Phx, LA, and Las Vegas with weekly home time. my question is is it possible to get decent miles on this route and how consistent are the miles driven on this route.

Generally, you won't get the miles running regional. You can make a good living though on regional with companies such as food service with multiple drops and good assessorial pays for loading/unloading, stop pay, etc.
What do you want, local, regional, coast-to-coast?

Watkins-Shepard has a terminal in Henderson. Probably get decent home time working there, if home time is a big priority. Website is wksh.

Old Dominion is considered a gravy company to work for. Apply with them, They have a terminal in Las Vegas. They do hire new CDL grads. Do the online appication. Sometimes it's good for the headquarters to see the application, not just the local terminal manager.

the only want i really have is to stay maximum western 11 and be home a minimum of two weekends a month. it is advertised that the southwest region is a 5-6 days out 2 off and 95% drop n hook. if i could make a decent living (to me thats 500+ a week) and be home on the weekends i would be very ok with it. the company I'm looking at pays .30-.33 for new grads to start in the southwest region. i just don't know how many miles one could get only running to 3 cities.

You need good assessorial pays to make it work. Does the company offer stop pay, layover pay, detention pay, etc?

Tru-Line Corp in Las Vegas does Southwest regional.

Yes they offer stop, detention and layover pay. Tru-line does not hire students the require minimum of 1 year experience.

Just because it says " 1 year exp required " do not let that discourage you from making a phone call....it never hurts to ask. With the way companies are hiring these days, sure they would rather you have one yr exp but if they have enough trucks it means they have enough pull with the insurance carrier to get what they want, including new hires. All assuming they aren't self insured anyways.

Sales people get told every day "no" - just sell your self to the company / situation that you want. Stop by a terminal near your house, take 5 minutes, and tell them who you are, experience, and what you are looking for. What is the worst that happens...you get told no?

Many companies are now hiring students, that just a few months ago didn't. Big driver shortage of "quality" applicants is causing this.

Apex Bulk Commodities pays $18-$22 hourly with overtime after 40 hours.

Don't pay any attention to "experience required" and submit applications anyway.

Old Dominion says 1 yr. experience, yet they've been recruiting heavily in good CDL schools the past few months. They were looking for 100 CDL grads just in PA alone.

Interstate Dist runs LA Vegas, and they will max you out. 275 miles each leg, up and back is a full day. It used to drop n hook in vegas mt back. 550 miles a day how much do you want.

Apex does not pay overtime, and by the way they pay mileage. They require a year minmum.
