Thats what I was thinking, did quite a few 8 hour breaks while getting loaded or unloaded at Cargo, usually because I got to a place a few hours early.

I ran into my trainer from Cargo at a rest area on Monday, I hadn't seen him in a while so it was nice to catch up. One thing he mentioned was now that the Navigo in his truck showed the speed limit as well as a warning if he was going over it. I must say that is slightly absurd, talk about micromanagement. If they don't report back to Claremont with this info yet I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before they do (such as Onguard issuing a critical event if "following too closely" for a certain amount of time).
Overall I still think fairly well of Cargo, especially compared to the other "larger" companies, but little things such as that seem to be a little overboard. At some point in time you gotta trust the driver and their training, experience, and instinct. Micromanaging little things like this only leads to a distracting environment and ultimately a more uncomfortable and unsafe driver. Just my 2 cents.
Its really nice to drive a truck that allows me to choose a speed safe for me, the road, and conditions I am in, as is a truck that doesn't have countless devices beeping and flashing lights such as Onguard/Vorad, lane detection, the warning about cars/objects beside you (or guard rails/trees 30 feet away) as well as a camera that has a light that is either green or red constantly shining in your face (that light on the camera was particular distracting to me at night). I believe I am a bit safer and more focused on the road with out those constant distractions. And its also nice to know that my company trusts my judgement and knows that I will get a load to its destination on time and safely with out micromanaging every movement along the way there. The Challenger, Dark_Majesty_06 and smurf-316 Thank this. -
I heard back today and it seems everything is good to go. I have had three places offer me a position so far. Now I just have to make a decision...unless something better presents itself before I finish school. Choices can be stressful.

As far as the speed warning thing. The new navigo update shows the speed limit for the road you are in. It is very small and you can barely see it unless you take your eyes off the road for 2 seconds lol. If you are going 4 mph over the limit the speed limit sign which is originally white just like the real signs will turn yellow. If you go 5 or more over it turns red. That's all. It's just like the speed warning on the truck GPS's only without the voice. It doesn't report you or anything like that. I've had the thing going downhill fast enough that it should have just had a picture of Satan laughing pop up on the Qualcomm. Haha

I will speak to Jerry and see if we can't get the Satan

smurf,
I'm going to be a newbie and am reading these blogs heavily to get a feel for companies to apply to after CDL training. CT sounds pretty good from what I've been reading here, so thanks for all the posts.
Question on the taking truck home policy, is that after I get my feet wet for 6-12 mths I plan to be a live in the truck homeless otr trucker. Day or two off now and then may be anywhere in the country so that would entail running to a local store for groceries/laundry/whatever needs. Would CT's policy fit with this?
Other important question would be as a newbie on peanuts cpm for a beginning period, could I expect 10k+ miles a month avg?
thx

If you wanted to go get some groceries or do something like that you better plan on leaving your trailer attached, they did not like for drivers to bobtail or leave trailers in unsecured locations. cargo does not like people using trucks for personal conveyance, so it also better be in route, or not far off of route.
Just my my experience when I worked there. -
Well those are good questions and I will answer them as best I know how.
First off, 10k with ANY company consistently is not very realistic. Now you will see months that you get 10k but a more realistic amount would be 8k. The reason for this is simple. There are certain times in a year that freight slows down. This is with ANY company, Not just CT. Another thing to consider is 10k really what you need every month? It's not only about the miles, But also about the CENT per mile. I have a friend that drives team for CRST. He averages around 27,000 miles per month. I average around 9k and I make more money than he does! I guess it really depends on what YOUR perception of a GOOD check is. At CT you can expect $600.00 to $750.00 pretty much every week. It will vary as all trucking jobs do but you shouldn't have to drive a million miles per month to make a decent check. Lot's of companies brag about all the miles you can get. But why drive 3000 miles per week when you can make the same pay driving 2100? There's a reason those drivers are pulling those kinds of miles.....LOW PAY!
As for living in the truck,
CT does not care if you ever go home. That choice is yours. If you want to stay out then your gonna run out your 70 sooner or later. Then you will want to park the truck at a truck stop so you can do some laundry and stock up on food. You can also find a nice shopping center to grab some groceries. CT will only be upset if you park your truck some place that is not secure. When I used to run hard when I drove for another company in my early years, I would find a nice little hotel when I reset. Park my truck in the hotel lot and stay a day at the hotel. You could do the same at CT. In my opinion the easiest thing to do would be to route yourself through Clairemont and take your reset there. That way you have your own room FREE and do your laundry for FREE! Then use one of the company cars and go do your shopping. That's what I would do.
