I would suggest here in Tennessee. We still do not have a state income tax. That is always a selling point for me. I would also suggest looking around the Chattanooga area. There are several fuel hauling companies in that area and the racks are all located within a couple of blocks of each other and that helps when trying to get loaded and you find that allocation is not available at your first choice rack. Some of the local companies in that area are Florida Rock and Tank Lines, Eagle, Spirit Express, PTI (not sure what that stands for), United, Kenan. Those are all I can remember right now. As long as your mathematics are up to snuff and you can get in a steady routine, fuel hauling isn't that big of deal, but there is a pretty steep learning curve to begin on loading procedures. The good thing is that most companies want you to be accurate before you are fast. Not being accurate and mixing product cost companies big bucks.

All depends on how far you go. Our Min is $50 for up to 19 miles. Then on scale every 5 miles after 30. Anything over about 75 is 27% of line haul. I get additional night differential. Also from 12pm Fri-12Sun $10 extra on all loads so min is $60. Do 4-6 per night around DFW and surrounding area. Go as far as San Angelo/Durant,OK/Tyler others. Normally stay around local area. Average $250-300 during week. $300-350 weekends. Plus stop pay, detention, shop pay, waiting on other driver pay. Having trainee is $60 a day extra. Have them lay it all out. If you are learning might be OK to get your foot in the door. Most now want lots of experience and clean record. You'll either love it or hate it.

No way would I run per load. I got paid by the hour and that started when I came through the gate until I left. Some of the other drivers at other companies got paid by the load and they hated us when the rack went down. Which it did all the time. We would pull 5 to 6 loads a shift and do it in 12 hours. I believe they gross over $300 a day now and there's nothing better than getting paid for all your time.

I worked (briefly) for a chemical company in the Pacific NW that did combo pay: hourly for loading/unloading and for runs under 50 miles (after 50 miles it switched to mileage), and a per load amount (I can't remember how much, it was over twenty years ago. I think it might have been $25/load). This was a local company, I ran within Washington state and in Portland, OR, home daily. On a good day, I could hit the full combination, and take in about $400 on a single run. I don't know about fuel, though, sorry.

I haul fuel up in here Portland, OR and would hands down take hourly over load pay. Way too many variables throughout a shift to take load pay. It's way better getting paid for all of your work. Plus time and a half after 40 is nice, too.

    FWIW, a normal shift is 3-5 loads in 12 hours, but 5 really pushes your 14. I work 1600-0400, 5 on 2 off/5 on 3 off.

Sounds like you're at a major. As you know most companies are getting away from that way of pay. I was down south with ARCO and BP butchered the company before they sold out. I know the terminal up there for ARCO took some hits too in pay when all this was done. It's a shame. I was up their when ARCO went to TOSS and I helped the terminal drivers start the new program. I saw a lot of companies come in and load and all of them were sharp and ready to work. I think it's dangerous and irresponsible for a company to cut any pay from a driver especially one that is hauling gasoline. The best way to get paid in the gasoline business is by the hour. There's too many stoppages at the loading rack and other areas to where you loose money.

No more majors up here. Arco ended their operations at the beginning of the year. Our company hired 5 (I think) drivers that were cut and some equipment from Arco. From what the guys here say, they really had it good at Arco and it really is a shame that it came to that.

In the good days ARCO was rated to be in the 10 ten companies to work for. That was all companies not just oil companies. Then the top members got greedy and sold us out.
