I have 98 w900 and it failed dot inspection because the steering wheel has a lot of play. I suspect its from guys using wheel to pull themselves up when getting into cab. Can this be repaired or do you have to buy a new column?
Thanks.

I doubt your reason is correct. Need more information on this violation. IF its your steering column there are u-joints in the shaft that can be replaced. If the play is where your pitman arm connects to you steering sector, you may be able to tighten the bolt on the collar that holds it to the output shaft.

You mean the column bearings are worn or the play while turning the wheel L&R?
Whatever it is, there is nothing on a truck that can't be rebuilt.
I've had inspectors shake the column before in addition to checking steering play L&R. -
I guess it's the column bearing. The steering wheel has slop in it if you grab it and shake it, not turn wise, but kinda like you're trying to pull it off while jiggling from side to side.

Just replace the column bushings.... they are worn from wear and little lube...

Thanks, Do you have to remove the column?

You should be able to do it just pulling the shaft/wheel.

Thanks, Philip
