Do Any OTR Truckers Still Use Atlas's?

I haven't used a paper map in a year. I have Google Maps on my android phone. No need for atlases anymore.

 

Yep I can read a map. I was navigating family trips by the time I was 10 or younger. I just learned, since driving a truck, that it's not easier or faster to stare at a paper map when I have a piece of technology that can give me all that info in a 7" screen instead of a 100 page 1' tall book that I have to flip back and forth to try and plan a route.
I punch in a address, zoom out to see the entire route. I'll check the detail summary to see what roads it's taking and go. I adjust on the fly.

 

I did navigating too. Use to trip plan for my Uncle before GPS when use to ride with him.

I respect your opinion but atlases work for me. I can look at a map for 5 minutes and memorize it. I have a photographic memory when comes to maps.

 

well i learned one thing from my long vacation....i cant post in here...lol and still hope to be here tomorrow...

They are old antique ways to me and don't work for me.
Relied on my gps for the last 5 years and haven't had a problem yet. A little common sense does have to get thrown in there too. If it says turn and you look at the road and it doesn't look like a "truck road" then I'll keep going until I find one that does. The unit will recalculate to my course and were off and running again.
I have found that as long as you follow the ORIGINAL route that it plans you won't normally have any problems. It's when you start second guessing it and trying to go your own route that it starts to get kinda wonky and will give you the weird routes.

 

Let me ask you. Say your going to South Carolina, city doesn't matter. Lets say your coming out of Lexington KY. We both know 75 south, 640 east 40 east 26 east. What does your GPS say for 640??? East or west??? Mine always says west.

 

Mine says exit 3 I-640 E Asheville.

 

This is what I do. The only time I use Google Maps satellite is to zoom in on the shipper or receiver to see the layout of the parking lot, what side the docks are on, and what side of the building the entrance is on so I can come out at the right way.

 

you have to ask yourself, does someone just get off on acting this way ?? or are they really that well , you get the point i mean do you do this to try and get a reaction ?? while laughin your rear off?? or what
