My TriPak has done this off and on for years now, regardless of filter changes and taking it to the ThermoKing people to have them look at it.

What I do now once I want AC on is to set the temp low enough so the unit starts but before the AC clutch engages (defaults to 8 seconds on mine) I raise the temp up to 90 so it just idles away for a minute or two. Then I set the temp at what I like and if it starts to sputter I quickly raise the temp back up so the AC clutch disengages and it regains normal engine speed. Once it starts running normally with the AC clutch engaged it will run like that as long as necessary.

    Good luck,

    Jim

Mine did that too started trying to kill it's self when the clutch kicked in . It was my spin on fuel filter had water in it and was full drained it and ran fine .. Replaced filter when I got home .

note .. Once you replace the filter be sure to fill it just like on the truck and even then the Tri pac will throw the ENG CODE 4-5 times until it fully primes

Hate when that happens. Good time to check the load board.

JH next time you replace the fuel filter you can put it in dry, turn until it contacts the mating surface on the filter mount and then back off until there is a little gap in between. Then on the same box as your reset switch remove the starter fuse, it should be marked on the box or you can find it in the manual which is online. Then try to start it by turning AC on max. You will hear the buzzer and it will preheat and pump fuel but the starter won't crank since you removed the fuse. It will pump fuel into the filter and spill over the top through the gap when its full. Then it will fail to start and set the ENG code.

Hit the filter with some brake cleaner, tighten it up, put the starter fuse back in, clear the code, and it should start on the first try.

Saves lots of wear and tear on your starter and you don't have to worry about having to crack injector lines if you happen to suck too much air in. It's also easier to get the filter in and started since you can put it in dry instead of spilling fuel all over yourself and making the filter a slippery pain in the *** as you put it in at an angle.
