I agree that costs associated with car hauling are higher than normal trucking due to higher insurance and trailer cost, and I'm estimating it's around $1.20-$1.50/mile. If you move 9 cars 3,000 miles @$1,700/unit you gross $15,300, and your operational cost is $3,600-$4,500 (not considering driver pay). This gives you well over $10K net profit for 7-9 days of work considering 5 days driving and 1-2 days each for loading and unloading. It just depends how much an O/O is willing to work for.
I used $1,700 that O/P was quoted. That's what car shippers want. Doesn't mean that's what they get. From reading other threads it seems the rates coast to coast are 35-40cpm, but I'm not sure if it's for dealers shipping all cars to same location or single units. A good deal is what's good for both a carrier and a customer. If I find a great deal on a car in CA but then have to pay $1,700 for shipping, I might as well pay more money and buy locally.

To wrap this up from my side.... I'm going to pay the fee and ship the car. But, it will be the last time I put myself in a position to deal with any of it. Technology desperately needs to catch up with this industry. There is room for much improvement in efficiency (think pricing/route/schedule transparency) which could eliminate the now lucrative middle man position. People could then pay less than the current insane rates, and drivers would still get paid more for doing the actual work. Thanks for all of your advice.

Schedule transparency? So you want it when you want it but not wanting to pay much for it and everything pointed out to you about costs, time, headaches involved went in one ear out the other. If you want to cut out the middleman there is always Craig's list. Just got ours moved for 1250.00 trailblazer.... anything north of 2K your getting ripped off..... paid 1700 first time for jeep grand cherokee.....

as far as insurance It's nowhere near as high as cargo insurance unless your hauling enclosed-exotics....... Most of the cars shipped around here aren't worth shipping......
As far as comparing it to cargo loads it's 1/7th or 1/10th of the load depending on your trailer.... 2200x7= $15,400 for 3500 mile on a 7 car hauler/2200x10=22,000 on a 10 car hauler.....

Cargo insurance is cargo insurance, no matter if it's boxes or cars...$600,000 cargo insurance isn't cheap...if you think it is however, i would be glad you send you my bill every month
and regardless of how many cars you can ship, your not always guaranteed to have a full load on at all times, so every car is bid as just that...a car...unless your sending a full load or at least a majority of one, I cut you no break because I have other cars on the load...if you don't like the pricing of a highly qualified and capable transporter, then like mentioned before, place your vehicle in the hands of an insurance less nitwit from Ushyt, and eventually you will be in a situation where you wished you had ponied up an extra 30% and got a real transporter.

Paying more for shipping your valuables is like having insurance on it...you pay for the oh #### moments...and the oopsies...it's the security of knowing it will arrive at it's destination in the exact same condition as when it left the point of origin, and in a timely manner. Most cut rate transporters, who clean $200-600 (or whatever) a week, 9/10 times won't give a second glimpse of thought to how well your vehicles is secured, protected, or handled...and guess what, when it shows up in a wad and he didn't have proper insurances, that vehicle (be it a $200k exotic, or a $5k commuter) is now worth practically nothing but scrap iron. Just my rant for today, I'll leave you to your mascarades now

I have had zero claims...yes ZERO claims in 11 years of trucking...not to mention nowhere in my post did I say it was unreasonable...I said "it wasn't cheap" ....so you can carry on with your ignorance, I'm sure forum lurkers are looking for some entertainment...
