What is the deal with low sulphur diesel?? Is all diesel low sulphur? or only new trucks require it? is it better? Should I buy a truck that uses low sulphur??

its the wave of the future.

You have two options at the pump, 500 PPM and 15 PPM

15 is low sulfur and manufactures warranties are voided in a 2007 or newer tractor for using 500 PPM fuel.

If you get a 07 or newer, you can have the problems like we have of only having 1 pump at a station that sells it or some with none at all. (east coast)

Out west they a lot of stations carry only ULSD.

Im not 100% but have heard guys with the older makes saying it sucks to run ULSD on their rigs not designed for it.

There has been Low sulphur since 92 or 93, they have the ULTRA low now which is basically alot drier and less cetane. You can run it in older engines, there are no issues, only thing is premature injector failure but it really has not been proven, i use a injector cleaner, fuel lubricator like lucas once a week in my truck. Its the newer 07+ engines that require ULSD or you will plug that PDF.

By the way i have not seen any low sulphur diesel anymore, only ULSD everywhere i go.

Same with me, all I see is the ULSD. I put a quart of cheap motor oil in every time I fuel. A mechanic I trust says it adds lubricity.

Texas is the only place that I have seen where you have a choice on diesel, otherwise it is ulsd. The only problem I have is it plugs my fuel filters up faster. A lot of guys I know over here on the west all have the same problem.

I would use ATF (automatic trans fluid) not motor oil. Problem with straight motor oil is it has detergent in it, detergent is not good for a diesel fuel injector.

Yup and then you are going to have a picky DOT man try to stick you for dyed fuel.

    I use Howes lube.

If you want to add lubricity to ULSD, the best lubricity comes from biodiesel. Research (click here to read) indicates that 1% biodiesel (in D2) or greater is the single best lubricity additive you can use. That is 1 gallon of pure (100% biodiesel) per 100 gallons of D2 ULSD.

Here is some more fuel info

    and even more...
