Haha! No, I am not a UFO fan - just like the West Texas landscape. So I have been doing a bit of research and it seems harder for an unexperienced guy to get started. Maybe I will clarify a bit for what I am looking for. I want to do this for short term. I am thinking that for a year I could just focus on driving, make the $, stay alive, and get out. I know it is hard work and that is ok with me. I really would want to minimize the risk of an accident. I would prefer a job where I do not have to drive in the cities, in traffic, or in some bad conditions. I am willing to make sacrifices of time and energy but not of safety. It seems OTR is the way to go.
I know most of you guys are in this for a while, but for me it would be a short term gig and a job I could return to. Is it worth it? What am I realistically looking to make?

It will take you a year yo get enough experience to drive somewhere else, Then to come back to it most companies require 1 of the last 3 years OTR or equalvant or be retrained, Not something that is quick and easy to bounce in and out of.

Millis drivers have posted they average $50K per year.
You can make much more if you go with hazmat/tankers; several hire new CDL graduates.

What would you say is the difference between OTR and hazmat/tankers in terms of pay and difficulty?

Agree with powder...this isn't a 1 year and done type gig...everything you have to do to get your foot in the door somewhere decent will take you over a year...and as stated, once you leave, you lose accreditation with most employers and need to be retrained...if your only looking to sight see for a year, I suggest you really think this over.
