Monster sinkhole swallows big rig, oil field equipment

[SIZE=-1]DAISETTA, Texas -- A monster sinkhole the size of several football fields is causing major problems in the Liberty County town of Daisetta. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]What started as a big crack in the road Wednesday morning grew to a huge hole by the afternoon. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]From Air 11, the long crater on FM 770 near FM 834 appeared to be about 50 feet deep and partially filled with a black liquid. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]An 18-wheeler, a drilling platform and other oil field equipment have fallen into the huge hole. [/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]Emergency crews from the Daisetta Fire Department were on the scene trying to figure out how to stop the sinkhole from growing. [/SIZE]

Traffic diverted from 'hungry' sinkhole in Texas

DAISETTA, Texas ' Trucks and other vehicles are being diverted away from a large sinkhole that swallowed up oil field equipment and some vehicles Wednesday in southeastern Texas near Houston.

The hole continues to grow and it's hungry. The hole gobbled up an 18-wheeler, a drilling platform and other oil field equipment. However, there have been no reports of injuries or home damage.

From the air, the long crater on Highway 770 near FM 834 appeared to be about as wide as two football fields and 10 stories deep and partially filled with a black liquid believed to be oil or oilfield sludge.

"Right now we're not concerned about any kind of explosion or any kind of hazard," said Tom Branch, coordinator of the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management. "We are monitoring some other things around the area to make sure everyone's OK."

Television news footage showed a tractor, oil field equipment and telephone poles falling into the sinkhole as it grew near Daisetta, a community of about 1,000 people northeast of Houston.

Vehicles from a nearby state highway were being diverted, said Mary Credeur, a dispatcher with the Daisetta Police Department.

"We're just going to shut the road down and see how big it gets. Hopefully it will stop," Branch said.

The sinkhole was believed to be at least 600 feet long and 150 feet deep.

"It's a huge hole in the ground, and it's still cracking," Credeur said.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the sinkhole, but its history as a once-booming oil town might be to blame.

Officials say the ground might have caved in because of the collapse of an old salt dome where oil brine and natural gas are stored underground. Daisetta sits on a salt dome, one of the most common types of traps for oil.

hell, I just got a load assingment in Baytown going home which means I need to run right up 770. guess I need to find out where it is being detoured

y'know - they suggest salt dome and the like as a possible cuplrit. Looking at some of those shots, it looks an awful lot like the surface above an underground nuclear test...
