I was told that I do not need my USDOT # if I lease onto another company. I would use their's instead.
is there any truth to this and any links to verify this.
Thanks for your help![]()

That is correct

Usually all you need when you lease on to someone is a registration, ifta, 2290, and bobtail insurance. Some companies handle that stuff for you but I would prefer to do it myself in my own name.
-
The only DOT# allowed on the truck is the operating carrier which is who you are leased to. If you yourself are not a carrier anymore, your DOT# will become inactive as the registrant only stays was eliminated.

I appreciate the quick responses.
I am buying a truck for the first time. I'm also currently waiting on my LLC and looking for a truck.
I plan to do the 2290 as I see it's not so profitable to buy cheaper fuel in another state. -
LLCs are worth the paper they are written on. Another way to get money as our lawyer put it.
-
My lawyer told me that is so many words, so I did it myself and saved over 50%.

Huh? The 2290 tax is the Highway Vehicle Use tax and is a $550 flat rate, it has nothing to do with your fuel tax.
Fuel tax is handled by the IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) and may or may not be handled by whoever you lease on to. If it isnt you will need to file this with your state and pay an estimated amount based on where you will be running. You will pay each state for their fuel tax based on how many miles you actually run in them no matter where you buy your fuel. -
I was with a company that computed the IFTA by taking the total miles of the fleet and dividing it by the total gallons of fuel the fleet used. So the trucks that got good mileage (like me) end up subsidising the fuel tax for the ones that have crappy mileage. I opted out of theirs and filed IFTA on my own. It's easy with good software out there that makes it easier. I saved a lot of $$$$.
