If you were at high boost and the compressor side came apart you might consider changing cac as the pieces can imbed in the soft aluminium and take out new turbo later.. I know 2 guys that changed their own turbo and cleaned everything they could but lost new turbo in less than a week when metal went through the new turbo .. Both were denied warranty because they reused cac . If damage is minor your probably ok cleaning it but if it's destroyed spend some time making sure there's nothing in cac

How to clean CAC? Remove it? Magnet on a string maybe? Should I take the piping and boots off on the side where the air goes into the head. What about up inside the exhaust manifold itself? I'll definitely take everything apart and clean including install new air filter. I don't want to buy 2 turbos. Any pointers or help is greatly appreciated. I installed this turbo several years ago so I know what it entails pretty simple job really. Just want to make sure I clean everything that needs it. I was empty when it blew up. I was doing about 45mph and kicked it to pass a slow car. When I got beside the car it popped and lost power. Started smoking. I pulled to the shoulder and raised the hood to have a look see. Ended up driving slowly another mile to a good parking spot off the highway. Got lucky I didn't have to go far.

I took my cac off and dumped it upside down to get all the pieces out that didn't go through it and can't remember for sure but think I flushed high water volume backwards through it and let it dry. Magnet won't work. Most pieces are aluminum. Cleaning from turbo to air filters is the big issue. Take every piece apart and clean real good.

You should change your air filters as debris blew backwards as well. Had it been daylight you would have seen dust blow out the air cleaners. When this happened to me I removed the CAC and flipped it upside down, shook it, bumped it with a rubber mallet, and blew air through it both ways using a 2 inch line off our compressor. You can not the fresh air side too clean. Sorry about the bad luck. Try Turbo Exchange near Charlotte NC. They are said to be top notch on rebuilding and sales. Good luck/

Turbo Exchange is where this turbo came from. Would like to deal with someone closer to home. Anyone here ever dealt with Taylor diesel in Nashville, TN? Or know a place near Huntsville, AL?

Got everything off. Worst part of the job was CAC removal but glad I did it's got all kinds of metal pieces rattling around. Just need to clean it all up and find new turbo somewhere. Air filter and housing has nice chunks of metal inside also.

Remove the grille, so that you can stand on the ground in front of the truck as you put it on...makes the job MUCH easier, especially if you don't have an extra set of hands or two helping out.

While ac condenser and rad are exposed its a good time to do a thorough bug cleaning of the fins .. As far as cleaning cac the ideas above sound as good as any

I learned this the hard way. It happened to me. Cost me 2 turbos BECAUSE I fix it on side of the road and DIDNT clean the CAC. I cleaned and replaced the filters But not the CAC. Only got 1/4 of a mile before new turbo let go, CAT said SORRY. Anyways.....second time around I remove the CAC and had a radiator shop clean it out. That happened about a lil over 3 1/2 years ago on a high dollar CAT turbo. I have since then replace it with a B/W stage 1 and put the CAT turbo away in garage for back up.
To the OP, take the CAC to a radiator shop would be my recommendation. And if you still have not found a turbo, try Turbo Supply, google them, they have several warehouses.
