I agree, when i was with roehl we got paid practical miles. it worked really well sometimes only because ive pulled loads that i got paid for 300 miles and only drove 270, then other times i would drive 300 miles and only get paid for 270. It usually evened out.
Although, I agree it aint right. Some of the better companies (small ones) that ive found pay practical but also pay in other ways.
I also stand firm on being paid % or salary.
Kllm does not pay for actual miles driven. Google swift lawsuit for doing this!

I had a job once where I got paid percentage. What a scam that was. Unless you're getting a copy of the Rate Con you have no idea what that load actually pays. All it takes is for the company to skim off the top first and then pay a % of the leftover. I called a broker once for directions like I was instructed but he assumed I was the dispatcher and started talking rate, that's when I found out the amount I was told by the dispatcher was 10% short.

I apologize, allow me to clarify, I'll take % pay only if I know what the rate is. Otherwise i could be taken advantage of like you said.
If I was 24 years old I could go work for my buddy out of Tennessee on a dedicated run, paid 50% of what the truck makes.

I work for Swift now and am being shorted 5-10% on every load. How did you figure the miles and got it corrected?

Lots of companies pay det reguardless if they can bill the customer. Some also bill for detention and stiff the driver. Not everyone pays short miles either. Some pay practical or even hub miles. Some are payed hub or practical and pay short to the driver.
Working for a company with a terminal near home will make driving home a non issue.
Bottom line, any uncompensated work for the company can be entered on a tax form. Or claim filed with L&I. Just keep records and give them the opportunity to pay. I f they don't file a claim and or deduct. -
The company I drive for pays the same for ALL miles off the odometer, loaded and empty. I cant use the truck for any personal reasons without approval though. They also suggest a route from zip to zip and track out-of route miles via QC. I havent had any issues with this.

Sure are lots of company apologists on here. Some people feel they should be compensated for being on the job.
If others feel like it is okay to sit at loading docks for free, or drive unpaid miles, that is their business.superflow Thanks this. -
I've had drivers head the wrong way on the interstate, or get lost and and add 300 miles to the their loads. What would a company that pays odometer miles do in a situation like that?

They track out of route miles and incentivise them in the fuel bonus, which can add up to .03 per mile. If a driver makes an honest mistake and notifies the DM, they are pretty forgiving as long as it doesnt become a reoccuring issue. If they catch a driver repeatedly going out of route, or way out of route without good cause, or permission, they will probably look at discipline or termination...I dont really know because it hasnt happened with me.
My first month I accidentally went OOR a couple times and nobody even said anything...I follow the suggested routes now, I actually look at a map, its kinda fun...
