Who do you use for your cell phone provider? Would it be cheaper to get a canadian sim card or calling card, or find a cell phone carrier that allows you to make calls while in Canadian territory?
For the guys that run US to Canada

Verizon is my carrier and for $15 they allow 1000 minutes a month. Texting isn't extra while in Canada.

What about data?
-
I used pageplus unlimited plan it worked up in Canada.
They sell the minutes at flying j registers $45
I upgraded to a smart phone but strictly calls the prepaid LG was a better phone. It would pick up sprint at&t & Verizon towers and could call from mexico USA and Canada. -
If you are going to be in canada a lot and need data. Call T-Mobile. They claim to have unlimited data in canada also. They roam on rogers which has decent cover a long all major highways except in northern ontario. But I would suggest actually finding details and make sure they aren't claiming "unlimited" as 1gb.

I'm usually not in Canada long enough to really need data. And if I absolutely must get a data connection, I'll search out a WiFi hotspot.

curious as to how the phone picked up sprint, att, and verizon. as att doesn't use the same signal as sprint/verizon.

I am with Sprint. For an extra $10/mo I get full Canada roam and text messaging. I left data off my Canada coverage, though. Most truck stops have wifi, so I haven't really needed it where I've been sent so far. You can also get free wifi at any Tim Horton's and OnRoute rest area.
